    From our Rector

Saint Peter ToRot – PNG’s first saint

    FR TOM RENSHAW SJ, RECTOR

Earlier this week, on 31 March, Pope Francis approved the canonisation of Peter To Rot as the first saint of our nearest neighbour, Papua New Guinea. This news brought significant joy to a number of us within the Riverview Community as Peter McNamara, our Gonzaga Head of House, is a relative of our newest saint!

A date is yet to set for the canonisation ceremony to be held in Rome.  Earlier this week, Fr Licini, a senior priest in Port Moresby, celebrated the news of Peter To Rot’s upcoming canonisation saying, “it is also significant because he is layperson. He was a catechist, married man with children and leader of the community”.

Peter To Rot was born around 1912 to Angelo To Puia and Maria la Tumul who were baptised as adults, being the first generation of Catholics in the Rakunai village on the hills near Rabaul. Peter’s father was the great chief of the village and he worked closely with the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart to deepen the faith in this region.

Peter was one of six children and he was taught the basics of the faith by his father. The local parish priest, Father Laufer, asked Peter’s father if Peter could study for the priesthood; however, his father thought none of his people were ready for the priesthood and it would be better if his son became a lay catechist. Consequently, Peter studied to become a lay catechist. Upon his graduation the following was said:

He was modest and there was not the slightest vanity in him, either with regard to his background nor capability. He let the older catechists guide him in his work and accepted their advice, but eventually eclipsed them all and soon became their recognised leader, although he was younger”.

Peter then returned to assist Fr Laufer in his home parish of Rakunai. He was known to be an excellent teacher and a person of considerable faith and charity.

In 1936 he married Paula la Varpit from the neighbouring village and they had three children. Tragically one died as an infant, another soon after the Second World War and his third child was born after Peter To Rot’s death.

Many of us are familiar with the story of the Japanese occupation of Papua New Guinea during the Second World War, especially through the iconic Kokoda Trail. The Japanese occupied Papua New Guinea from March 1942 and towards the end of 1943 they forbade religious services. Despite this ban, Peter continued to hold services in secret, as well as preparing couples for marriage.

He clashed with the Japanese soldiers as he was opposed to polygamy. Peter confronted his older brother, Joseph, who had taken a second wife. Peter was subsequently betrayed to the local police who arrested him after finding religious objects in his house. This took place just before Christmas in 1944. When they came to arrest Peter, he was planting vegetables in the garden to give to the Japanese.

=Despite the efforts by the local chief who was a Christian and the Methodist minister to secure his release, Peter was sentenced to two months imprisonment in a concentration camp. Peter spoke with his mother and told her he thought he might die and that he was prepared to do this for Jesus Christ. On the day of his martyrdom, he said to his mother, “the police told me that, this evening, a Japanese doctor will come to give me some medicine. Surprising since I’m not sick. I suspect this is a trick”.  Indeed it was, as Peter was given a lethal injection and then something to drink. The poison was acting slowly so he was held down and struck on the back of his neck with a beam.

When Saint Pope John Paul II beatified Peter on 17 January 1995, two days before Mary MacKillop, he declared that Peter had been killed in hatred of the faith. You can read Pope John Paul II’s homily from the beatification ceremony here.

As we approach Holy Week, a time in which we are invited to walk with Jesus and to remain with him in his suffering, may the courageous and heroic example of Peter To Rot be a source of strength for each of us.

    Wishing you all every blessing.

    Male Adolescence and Boys’ Education

    MR MARK TANNOCK, PRINCIPAL

This week, the Kathleen Burrow Research Institute at Catholic Schools NSW released an issues brief entitled 'Echoes of Disparity: Boys’ Education in Australia' The report is empirical in nature and suggests a growing crisis in boys’ education in Australia.

Using a range of data, the report suggests that this crisis is not new but has been evident in Australia for at least 30 years. It goes further to suggest that successive federal and state governments (on both ends of the political spectrum) have failed in their public policy response to arrest the decline of boys’ educational outcomes. International research demonstrates similar disparities in other countries.

The report reveals that boys are twice as likely to struggle academically in school and are over-represented amongst the most academically vulnerable in schools. It argues that curriculum reform in recent decades and the proliferation of various new pedagogical practices have been to the advantage of girls, but to the disadvantage of boys.

The release of the report comes in the same week when a new Netflix drama series is attracting much attention both at home and abroad. Adolescence is a story about a 13-year-old schoolboy named Jamie Miller who is arrested for the murder of a girl in his school, Katie Leonard. The story is about the dangers of the misogynistic elements of our online world (the so-called manosphere) and the evil effect they could have on impressionable adolescent males.

Both of these developments have a special relevance for a Jesuit boys’ school like Saint Ignatius’ College Riverview. We hold that an all-boys school like Riverview is an important choice for families as they decide which educational environment is most suited to their sons. Some boys are better suited to an environment that caters for the unique learning and formation needs of boys and young men.

We also hold that as an all-boys school we hold a very special responsibility to support parents in the education of their sons so that they are capable of deep, authentic relationships with girls and women. Relationships that are genuine, freely committed to and forgiving. Relationships that are rooted in our Christian understanding that all of us are created in the image and likeness of God. Relationships that are loving.

The boys of our school face significant social challenges that were unimaginable two generations ago. Some, like the ongoing elevation of women within our society, are welcome and overdue. Others, like the vilification of boys simply because of their maleness, are abhorrent. I have found the boys of Riverview to be fine, endearing young men. None are perfect, but they give me hope for the future.

Saint Ignatius offers us an exemplar for the type of man we hope our boys become. Heroic, humble, dutiful, courageous, gentle, faithful. A man for others.

A copy of the report from Catholic Schools NSW can be found here.

PATRICK GARDINER (YEAR 11, CAMPION HOUSE)

On Wednesday, Henry and I were honoured to represent the College in attending the Archbishop’s Student Leadership Luncheon. During this lunch, we had the opportunity to meet the Archbishop of Sydney, Anthony Fisher, alongside student leaders across the Archdiocese of Sydney, discussing faith and leadership under Catholic principles and teachings. During this occasion, we received unique perspectives from student leaders and shared Ignatian values that guide our own leadership journey. This experience reinforced the importance of faith-driven leadership and the role it plays in building a strong, compassionate school community.

Australian Rowing Championship - Lake Barrington, Tasmania

MR JIM BUSTEED, ASSISTANT ROWING SPORTS PROGRAM COORDINATOR

Following the Head of the River, three crews from the College travelled to Lake Barrington in Tasmania for the Australian Rowing Championships. This regatta attracted over 2,280 competitors from approximately 280 rowing clubs and schools from all over Australia.

The 1st VIII (Harry Kelly (bow), George Field, Angus McCabe, William Bryant, Montague Hyles, Julian Carr, Zachary Hyde, Harrison Davis (stroke), Henry Burton (cox) coached by Mr Matthew Curtin) competed in the Australian Championship Schoolboy Eight for the Barrington Cup which the College last won in 2023. This event attracted twenty-four entries so the pathway to the Final was Heats, Repechage, where necessary and semi-finals.

They maintained their unbeaten record for the season, winning their heat to progress to the semi-finals where they were 9.87 seconds faster than the next crew. In the final, they led from the start to win by 4.67 seconds from Shore with The Southport School third. This was a fitting end to their season, adding the National title to the NSW Championship Schoolboy Eight title they won earlier in the season and the Major Rennie Trophy at the Head of the River Regatta. They are to be commended for their performances on the water and for their passion for the sport, leadership and natural humility which has made them very positive role models for both the junior and senior rowers

The Year 10 1st VIII (Harry Christie (bow), Sebastian Conna, Thomas Roche, Samuel, Barry Harrison Polin, Oliver Taylor, Harry Walker, James Davis (stroke), Zac Burton (Cox) Coached by Mr Jack Hargreaves) competed in the Australian Championship Under 17 Schoolboy Eight. They progressed directly to the Final after winning their heat in the fastest time. In the final they were involved in a very tight contest with St Joseph’s to the 1500metre mark before producing a strong finish to win by 2.46 seconds. They also have had an outstanding season as they also won the NSW Championship Under 17 Eight and more recently at the Head of the River.

A composite crew from the 2nd VIII and 1st IV (Jack Haire, Hamish Walker, Tom McClintock, Tomma Tancred (Stroke), James Stack (Cox) coached by Mr Hugh Courts) competed in the Australian Championship Schoolboy Four. Not having rowed as a crew until the week of this regatta they showed strong improvement each time they raced. They were third in their heat and so progressed to the repechage where they led to the 1500 metre mark before finishing a close third and so progressed to the B Final. Had they rowed in the other repechage, their time would have qualified them for the A Final.

In the B Final they led all the way to win by 4.97 seconds and so finish ninth overall. The quality of this performance can be measured in comparing their time to those of the crews in the A final which would have seen them on the podium.

On the back of these performances the College also won the Schoolboy Point Score for the regatta.

Congratulations to all crews and coaches under the direction of Mr Daniel Noonan and thanks to the parents who have supported the crews throughout the season and in Tasmania.

What does Cross Country have to do with Chuck Norris??

MR ALEXANDER GODBOLD, CROSS COUNTRY SPORTS PROGRAM COORDINATOR

The old adage echoed by the man himself Chuck Norris rang true over the weekend.

“Cross Country. No half times, no time outs, no substitutions. It must be the only true sport.” – Chuck Norris

While many would have revelled in hearing their sport was cancelled and extra hours under their doona in bed was on the cards. Our cross country team was out at Centennial Park for their first trial race of the season.

Wet was an understatement but our boys didn’t complain as they pounded the course that would have seen marshals better placed on stand up paddle boards.

Normally the flattest and fastest course of the season it was a bit of fun for our boys to hit out in conditions more alike those experienced by our swim team on Friday night.

Ther boys commitment to themselves and their teammates will set the tone for the effort and aptitude of the season to come.

    Congratulations to:

    - Xavier O’Hea who finished 8th overall and 4th in GPS.

    - Charlie Baird-Petroni who finished 24th overall and 11th in GPS.

Well done to all boys who competed and a big welcome to Ryan Choy, Lachlan Maiers, Charles Fuller, Xavier O’Hea, Charlie Baird-Petroni, Tobias O’Hea, and Marc-Felipe Lewis on their debut races.

Best of luck for the season to come!

    Teresa House Mass and Supper

MR CHRISTIAN ILIGAN, TERESA HEAD OF HOUSE

The Teresa House Mass and Supper, held on 20 March, was a heartwarming and memorable event that brought together our community in a celebration of faith and fellowship. The evening began with a moving Mass at the Dalton Chapel, where the sense of unity was palpable as we gathered in prayer and reflection. We were fortunate to have our Mass celebrated by our very own mentor Fr Dooley. Will Spora, our House Captain, delivered a reflection that centred on compassion, service, and the importance of supporting one another, which resonated deeply with all who attended.

A key highlight of the evening was the special recognition of the Year 12 students. As part of the ceremony, each Year 12 student was presented with a candle, symbolising their journey and the light they bring to the community. This gesture marked an important milestone in their school experience and was a beautiful moment of reflection and celebration for both the students and their families.

Following the Mass, we enjoyed a delicious supper that provided a perfect opportunity for parents, students, and staff to connect in a relaxed and informal setting. The supper was generously provided by the parents, and we extend heartfelt thanks to all those who contributed. We are also deeply grateful to the families who donated prizes for the raffle and to those who volunteered their time to assist with setting up and packing up the event. Your efforts were crucial to making the evening a success.

The evening was not only a celebration of community but also a fundraising opportunity. Thanks to the generosity of all those involved, we were able to raise $1,098, which will go toward supporting the Indian Immersion Trip later this year. This event was a reminder of the strength and kindness of our community, and we look forward to many more shared moments like this in the future.

On behalf of Mr Freedman and the Teresa House Mentors, we look forward to the year ahead with our Teresa Community.

    Boarding Recreation - Archery Tag

MR ALEXANDER GODBOLD, BOARDING RECREATION OFFICER

A wet weekend with the majority of sport cancelled and our boarders couped up inside. Something was needed to let our boarders blow of some steam, so, why not let them loose (archery pun intended) with bows and arrows.

If it was 1415 and the boys had been marched into the Battle of Agincourt, we would probably have seen a number of boarding beds become available the following Monday. Not to stress, it was all done under controlled circumstances and with arrows that were not going to cause anything other than some light emotional damage from the mate who managed to hit you.

The boys were split into teams and went through some quick training before getting stuck into rounds of trying to shoot their mate in the head, arm, torso, or whatever was sticking out from behind a barrier.

While not on the archery field our boarders were able to let out some pent-up energy on the courts and in the pool as they waited for their next turn on the bows.

Congratulations to team Alpha who were the tournament round winners.

It was a miserable weekend weather wise and a bit of a disappointing one with most of our sporting trials cancelled. Thankfully we were still able to make the most of our Sunday activity time.

    BPA Term 1 Wrap-up

    BOARDER PARENTS ASSOCIATION

Our boarding families have kicked off the year with events taking place throughout the term. The gatherings provide the perfect opportunity for families to catch up with old friends and warmly welcome new members into our boarding community.

    Year 6/7 – Laura Stalley

On Saturday, 8th March, our Year 6/7 boarding families came together for a wonderful evening of connection, conversation, and laughter. Originally, it was envisioned as relaxed afternoon at Balmoral Beach, enjoying the fresh sea breeze and scenic views. However, the weather had other plans. Fortunately, we were able to secure tables at The Buena Vista in Mosman, ensuring the event could proceed where Parents and boys mingled effortlessly, sharing stories, experiences, and plenty of laughs. The boys, full of energy and excitement, enjoyed their time exploring the venue and later treated themselves to some delicious ice cream, adding a sweet touch to the evening.

    Year 8 – Jess McKay

On the 21st of March, many of the parents and siblings of the Year 8 boarders, as well as a large number of the boys, got together for a casual meal at The Diddy. It was a lovely, relaxed evening with lots of talk with old friends and new, mostly about our boys while they played touch footy on the greens. Those families that couldn't make it to Sydney for the weekend were missed, however, it was great to see your boys that were ferried to and from The Diddy for the meal. Looking forward to the next catch-up!!

    Year 10 – Sim Madigan

A lively bunch of Year 10 Boarder Parents gathered at The Longueville on Friday, 7 March, for a fun evening full of laughter and chat! It was the perfect chance to mingle with new families and kick off the Riverview year with old friends. The night was a great reminder of just how special it is to connect with people you've known for a short or long time to share experiences and stories. A big shoutout to all who made the journey from near and far to join in. Plans are already in the works for an end-of-year celebration with the boys to bookend the 2025 school year in style!

The event was a fantastic way to bring our boarding families together, reinforcing the close-knit spirit that defines our community. It was heartening to see friendships rekindled and new bonds formed, reminding us of the support and warmth that make our boarding experience so special.

    Year 11 – Trisa Eckermann

On Sunday March 23, Mothers & sons from Year 11 Boarding were treated to beautiful lunch at the Royal Motor Yacht club at Point Piper. Our sons looked handsome dressed in shirts and ties and the room was decorated with lovely peonies with a spectacular view.

The thoughtful speeches given by a few of the sons about how they felt about their mums and how lucky as sons they are to have special mums were heart felt and left all the mothers feeling very special. The moment was made even more touching as the boys presented their mothers with flowers from the tables, leaving all the mothers feeling truly cherished.

You could see that the boys enjoyed the day, and it was lovely that boys whose mothers were unable to attend were still able to join us.

Thank you to the organising committee of Claudine, Nicky and Kath for such a wonderful event. It will definitely be a day we will always remember.

ANGUS DEVLIN, DRAMA CAPTAIN AND HARRISON HOOPER, DRAMA VICE CAPTAIN

“There's change coming, once and for all!”

This coming May (28th - 31st), the Ramsay Hall will once again become Riverview’s very own ‘Broadway’ stage, where it will be transformed into the streets of New York City, 1899. This joyful and entertaining story of Disney’s NEWSIES captures the strength of the young when they band together and stand up against injustice.

When charismatic union leader, and paper boy Jack Kelly dreams of a better life, he is emboldened to lead his very own ragtag gang of teenage ragamuffins to take on the king makers of New York, driving change and fairer work conditions for the thousands of children, exploited and invisible, earning a meagre living selling newspapers on the streets.

With toe-tapping tunes and memorable musical numbers, Jack’s tenacity, along with his best friend Crutchie’s lovable optimism, sets the stage for an empowering story. With newcomers Davey and his younger brother Les they join forces with the newsies of New York to take on Joseph Pulitzer, the publisher of The World , when he raises the price of ‘da papes’ to increase his profits. With the help of New York Sun reporter Katherine Plumber, they seize the day and prove how important it is to speak up and take a stand — even when you're one of the little guys.

In this modern-day David and Goliath, do or die situation, be inspired by this heartwarming story of courage, mateship, and love, as the newsies of Lower Manhattan form a union and STRIKE - joining together once and for all!!

NEWSIES will capture your heart, and leave you inspired by the true story of the 1899 Paperboy strike.

Don’t delay in saving the date for 28th - 31st of May 2025

Tickets to be released early Term 2.

    Cast Interviews

What attracted you to the role of Jack Kelly? The level of vulnerability that he shows combined with the façade that he puts on as a confident and charismatic leader - you know,  he has such a softer side to him. Being able to convey both sides on stage with such amazing characteristics is what I wanted to portray as Jack.

Angus Devlin (Year 12) Role: Jack Kelly

What's your favourite part about Newsies and playing Albert? My favourite part about Newsies and playing Albert is the energy and excitement that you receive from being in such a production. The boys have been practicing for so long and we're excited to put on a great show full of energy and incredible characters.

Danny Gordon (Year 10) Role: Albert (Manhattan Newsie)

Elliot, having a lead role as Les in your first Riverview production, what's that experience been like for you? Well, I think that I joined Newsies in the first place because I knew it was going to be an amazing show. The rehearsals are so much fun and worth every second - the end product is going to be brilliant. My character Les is kind of like the cute, fun-loving child in the musical. I think everyone watching the show is going to have a great time and we are going to be so happy with it all.

Elliot Johnston (Year 7) Role: Les
