    From our Rector

    Returning to Riverview

FR ROB DAVOREN SJ, ACTING RECTOR

As the new term commences, I begin my role of Acting Rector, replacing Fr Tom Renshaw SJ, who is away on sabbatical. While I have only just commenced at the College, I am pleased to welcome all back for the start of the new term.

Many of you may be aware that I was previously at the College between 1984-89 and 1998–2006. I have been asked what it's like to return to Riverview. My response is that, while much has changed, many traditional values and procedures remain evident. One example is the genuine welcome extended to visitors and newcomers. I have experienced a warm welcome from many parents, teachers, and, certainly, from the boys themselves. The boarders have been particularly active in welcoming me, for which I am very grateful. I agree with the proposition that much of our culture of welcome can be put down to the positive presence of the boarding community, both the boys and their families.

My current term at the College commenced a few days before term resumed. I have had the opportunity to participate in several events, including the Nostalgia Mass for the Classes of 1942-1975 and their spouses. This was followed by lunch with around 115 Old Boys in attendance. It was inspiring to hear some of the stories and school-day recollections, and to sense the great love these old scholars have for the College. While many mentioned good times, there was also an acknowledgement of the challenging, even painful, moments.

The presence of good friends and, in many cases, sympathetic teachers, made it possible to get through the difficult times. In the toast to the College, we heard the following wise reflections from Bob Meagher (OR1958): “The years 1942 to 1975 were 33 years of change. Our parents, the Jesuits and lay masters who cared for us, had experienced the effects of the Great Depression, the Second World War and the Korean and Vietnam wars. The experience and wisdom of these men and women who cared for us prepared us for what lay ahead, encouraging us to be men for others”.

A few days later, I attended the New Parents' Dinner. A majority of the students had commenced at the College in Term 1 and had settled in, and were now adept at finding their way around the College. A common reflection from parents was that their son/sons were loving College life, but some described the early days as being a little challenging. It has been evident to me that older students take particular care of the younger ones, both in terms of friendly chatter and assistance with challenges that new students experience. I witnessed the care the boys receive from their Heads of House and Mentors, and the genuine warmth evident when boys first arrive in their House area at the start of the day. After being away from school life for nine years, I am certainly enjoying the opportunity of returning to a world of energy and vitality that is found in a school community as special as Riverview.

Those of you who have been in the North Sydney parish of Saint Mary’s or at St Aloysius’ College may recall Fr Michael Stoney SJ, who died on Wednesday last week. Michael was 90 years old, with 73 of those spent as a Jesuit. His final years were spent at Saint Vincent's Aged Care in Kew, Victoria. This facility is very near Campion College, and the Jesuit community enjoyed Michael visiting to share mass and lunch. While his physical mobility had declined, Michael’s mental capacity remained active and fully engaged till the very end. Many marvelled at his gift for remembering names and family details even from many years ago. Fr Stoney’s life touched many people, and one of his fellow Jesuits wrote as follows:

He was indeed a ‘giant’ in so many ways, and a great influence on me and my vocation both in and out of the Society. He taught me as a boy in the classroom and as a footy coach. He was my Rector at St Aloysius’ College, where I first taught as a scholastic. There, his wisdom, guidance and humour greatly helped me. I am very grateful to have known him over so many years. His insight and truly discerning advice on novices, human nature and the spiritual, I shall always treasure. May he rest in peace, indeed!

Michael's funeral was held at the Immaculate Conception Church in Hawthorn last Thursday.

I'm sure everyone would be aware of the difficult situation in the Middle East and the repercussions for us in Australia. Of particular concern is the ongoing supply of fuel, especially for transport industries and those on the land. Many of our boarding families will be facing significant challenges, and the prospect of limited supplies of fertiliser and other products that need to pass through the Straits of Hormuz adds further uncertainty and anxiety in the immediate future. I would like to reinforce Principal Mark Tannock’s reassurance to families that we are willing to support and assist those suffering financial or similar pressures.

The crisis in the Middle East has seen some unsavoury accusations and criticisms of Pope Leo. Many Catholics have been delighted that the Pope has spoken out, criticising injustices and the lack of attention to Gospel values. After criticisms for speaking and becoming involved in politics, Pope Leo said he would continue to speak out. "I don't think that the message of the Gospel is meant to be abused in the way that some people are doing," he said. "I will continue to speak out loudly against war, looking to promote peace, promoting dialogue and multilateral relationships among the states to look for just solutions to the problem”.

Let us continue to pray that the war may come to a just and timely ending.

Our families may be interested in the forthcoming book launch of Fr Frank Brennan’s latest book, Pope Francis, the Disruptive Pilgrim’s Guide , next Monday evening. This will take place in the Ron Dyer Centre (42 Ridge St, North Sydney 2060) and will be followed by a light supper. The guest speaker is Geraldine Doogue AO, a Riverview past parent. For further details and materials, see HERE and also HERE .

    RSVP HERE.

I believe that the gospel from last Sunday (the road to Emmaus) can help Christians navigate the difficult challenges that we experience at present. You may recall the story of the road to Emmaus, which describes two disciples leaving Jerusalem. They were fleeing the risk of persecution there and were fearful and downcast. Jesus approached and asked what they were talking about. They did not recognise him and expressed surprise that he would not know about the events surrounding the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and the persecution of his disciples. The disciples expressed great sadness that their hopes for Jesus as the Messiah had been dashed. Jesus then explained that the Messiah was destined to suffer.

He said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?” Beginning with Moses and the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself. Upon reaching their destination, the disciples invited Jesus to join them. “At the meal he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened, and they recognised him, and he disappeared from their sight”.

With renewed faith and courage, the disciples turned back to Jerusalem to share their experience with the other disciples. They told of what had happened on the road, and how Jesus was recognised by them when he broke the bread. They spoke of their hearts burning while Jesus talked with them. This gospel reminds us that we may not recognise Jesus in our daily interactions, but he is present even in the most difficult and depressing times. Sometimes he comes to us through the agency of caring friends, family or teachers. We only need to invite him to be with us as the disciples did and to spend some quiet time where we can place our cares and concerns before our loving God. The breaking of the bread, which the disciples experienced, continues today each time we celebrate the Eucharist.

As the new term commences, it is fitting to ask the Lord to bless our loved ones and all in the Riverview community. Give us faith, Lord, to know that you walk with us even during difficult times, even though we fail to recognise you. May our hearts burn when we sense your loving action in our lives.

Welcoming a New Term at Riverview

    MR MARK TANNOCK, PRINCIPAL

Welcome back to all Riverview families to Term 2 at the College. I hope that the holidays were a time of rest and regeneration for the boys. It has been wonderful to see them back this week. It has also been wonderful to have Fr Rob Davoren SJ join us this term as our Acting Rector. He has been getting to know the boys and our staff over the last week and relearning the College after having served here on two separate occasions over the last 40 years.

As we set out for Term 2, I encourage our Year 12s, the Class of 2026, to hit the ground running this term. Our pending graduates have only 20 weeks left as students at the College; therefore, it is important to engage immediately in their studies and the other opportunities Riverview offers them. They have set a fine example for the rest of the College this year, and we are excited for them as they approach their Riverview zenith.

We ask that the rest of our students also commit to their studies as we commence the term. Specifically, I want to make it clear that we expect them to be engaged and cooperative learners in each of their classes. We ask that each student (from Years 5 to 12) reflect on their behaviour in their classes to ensure that it meets the expectations we have of each student of our College. These are expectations that each young man is more than capable of meeting.

On Wednesday, all students and staff gathered in Ramsay Hall for our annual ANZAC Day Assembly, honouring all the men and women who have served our nation in war and in peace. We also honoured the many Old Boys who gave their lives in service to our nation and reflected on the enduring impact of war on those who returned since Australia became a nation in 1901.

We were privileged to have the St Aloysius’ College Cadet Unit Colour Party in attendance, adding a touch of military ceremony to our experience. We are grateful to the College and Major Matthew Holland of the OC for their contributions. Mr David Wales provided historical context on the Australian Army, setting the tone for the reflections that followed. Beau Inman (Year 10, Ricci) delivered a terrific address on the legacy of the Vietnam War for veterans, including a personal reflection on his grandfather’s experience. We were also privileged to hear a moving account of service in Vietnam from Mr Graham Cook, shared on his behalf by his son, staff member Mr Anthony Cook.

A wonderful performance of ‘O Valiant Hearts’ by the Senior Choir led into the Roll of Honour, read by Alex Saeedi (Year 11, Gonzaga) . Over 100 Old Boys of the College who lost their lives in service to Australia were named individually. As each name was announced, a Year 12 student stood in silence to represent their sacrifice. The Assembly concluded with The Last Post, a minute’s silence, and Reveille, marking a poignant moment of remembrance.

On the subject of war, I spoke to all Senior School students on Tuesday as they returned to the College and said the following:

I know many of you will be concerned by the war in the Middle East and the economic impact it is having on Australia. Our boarding families from regional NSW are particularly feeling this impact. Please be assured that the College will respond with compassion and conscience to whatever might occur in the future.

While there are genuine signs of the world becoming more dangerous and unstable, I want you to have hope.

Riverview is a Catholic School, and as such, we are a part of the 2000-year-old tradition of the Church. We believe that our shared Catholic faith will become increasingly important for you and our community in this increasingly uncertain world.

The moral clarity of Pope Leo XIV in recent weeks is a reminder to us that, for all its failings, at its best, the Catholic Church is a source of goodness and love. Our faith gives us hope as an Easter people that good is more powerful than evil, that light triumphs over darkness, and that death was defeated by Christ on Easter Sunday.

Congratulations to the following students who were selected to represent the combined GPS Touch Football Team at the CIS Touch Football Championships next Friday, 1 May, at Penrith. They will be playing alongside students from King's, St Joseph's, Newington, and Shore to compete against other combined CIS organisations, including CAS, ISA, and others, to gain selection to the combined CIS team.

    P&F Update - Term 2, Week 1

MRS CLAUDIA McINERNEY, P&F PRESIDENT 2026

Welcome back to the College and to a busy term of schooling, service and many co-curricular activities of winter sport, music, debating and drama, culminating at the end of the term with the P&F Charity Art Show.

The P&F Association also welcomes Fr Rob Davoren SJ (back) to the College as Acting Rector for Term 2, and looks forward to our sons and the extended community receiving his wisdom and guidance during the term.

On Monday night, we welcomed 200 new parents to the College at the very special New Parents' Dinner in Ramsay Hall. After a term of settling the new students into the College at Regis, Year 7 and through the senior years, the evening focused on welcoming parents and families to the College community. The evening had an incredible sense of new energy and excitement. The keynote speakers encouraged active participation in the College's aims, including support of the College Foundation and the P&F's initiatives.

This is a good reminder for all parents, especially ahead of the Winter sports season, when parental contribution is vital. Saturdays in Winter require hands-on support from all parents to deliver the warm hospitality for which Riverview is known. Can you imagine the feedback if there were no cold drinks, bacon egg rolls, or Zappos at Regis or First Field? Please demonstrate the College's philosophy to be "men & women for others" by helping out. It is also a very enjoyable and easy way to meet parents and reconnect with old friends.

All profits raised by the P&F throughout the year benefit our students. Funds come from Saturday BBQs, canteens, merchandise sales, events, and raffles. At the end of each year, they are donated to the Bursary Foundation and capital works activities.

Sign up to support the P&F on Saturdays HERE. Details about P&F communications and upcoming parent events are provided below. For assistance or to offer your support, contact PandFPresident@riverview.nsw.edu.au .

We wish every family a wonderful Term 2 and hope to see you all at one of the P&F events or helping out on a Saturday over winter.

    TAS Rugby Competition

OLLIE PRESS AND FINN MATTHEWS, YEAR 6

During the holidays a group of Regis Year 6 boys went to Armidale to compete in the TAS Rugby Competition. We were fortunate enough to play six games, winning four. One of the games that stood out for the whole team was the game against the Hunter Harlequins. They were a strong team, and until we played them in our last game, they were an undefeated team, but we showed courage and determination to pull out with a win. We were on a high.

We loved being around our mates and the fact that we could come together as a team to learn new skills and improve. Everyone was so thankful that they got the opportunity to go. Overall, it was a great experience, and everyone had so much fun playing together. A big thank you to our coaches and staff who accompanied us - Mrs de St Germain, Mr Thompson and Mr Guild and of course our parents who cheered us all on.

    Craft of Writing Workshop

On Thursday, Year 12 English Advanced, Standard and Studies students from Riverview participated in a Craft of Writing Day. The day began with an Advanced student panel with writer and poet Nam Le who communicated his writing inspiration and process. Standard and Studies students attended a presentation from James Knight in Cova Cottage who delved into his experience as a writer and how to write and develop settings. Throughout the day, students shared in writing workshops around the College to develop their own craft. Students relished the opportunity to enhance their HSC writing skills, collaborate, and connect.

    Year 8 Drama Excursion

    CURTIS LIU, YEAR 8

The Year 8 Drama class went to the Theatre Royal this week to see Cluedo . When we arrived, we walked to the centre, checking in and getting settled in our designated seats. When the show started, there was a bit of a disturbance that set off a fire alarm, and I think everyone thought it was scripted, but after that, the show came back on and kept going. During the show, there were a lot of laughs, giggles, questions, queries and enjoyment all around. And after the show ended, we all left the theatre amazed by how skilful some people can be. On the bus ride back, my friends told me they loved it because of how dramatic the actors were and how they put on a wonderful show for everyone.

    NSW State Teams Racing Championships

    MR MATTHEW BENTLEY, SAILING SPC

Over three days late in Term 1, the Riverview Sailing Team competed at the NSW State Teams Racing Championships, the pinnacle event of our sailing calendar. The regatta tested all crews in exceptionally challenging conditions, with driving rain and winds exceeding 30 knots across the opening two days. Despite this, our sailors demonstrated resilience, composure, and a high level of tactical skill throughout the competition.

The Riverview 1st VI delivered an outstanding performance, finishing 3rd in the state from a strong field of 18 teams. This result reflects the crew’s discipline, teamwork, and ability to perform under pressure in demanding conditions. Our 2nd VI also enjoyed a successful regatta, securing an equal 8th place and competing with determination against some of the state’s top school programs.

As a result of their podium finish, the 1st VI has qualified for the National Championships to be held in Hobart later this year. This is a significant achievement for the program and a testament to the commitment of our sailors and coaches. We look forward to representing Riverview on the national stage and building on this success.

Rowing National Selections and American University Scholarships

MR JIM BUSTEED, ASSISTANT ROWING SPC

Following the recent Australian Rowing Championships in Tasmania, the final selection trials were held at Penrith for the Australian Senior and Under 23 Teams. This involved five days of high-pressure racing, including small boat racing and testing and participation was by invitation based on performances throughout the season.

Recent Old Boys, George Field, Oscar Beregi, Jack Power (Under 23), and Mackenzie Thompson and Lachlan Doust (Senior) were invited to participate. Congratulations to these young men on their continued commitment to the sport, and especially to Lachlan Doust, who was selected in the Senior Australian Rowing Team, which will compete in the World Cup and World Championship Regattas later this year.

Five members of last year’s very successful 1st VIII have accepted scholarships to American University for Rowing. These are Henry Burton and George Field at Washington University, Harry Kelly at Mercyhurst University, Angus McGrath at Boston University, and Zach Hyde at the University of California. We wish them well as they move on to this new rowing experience.

With many Australian men and women rowers studying at university in the United States, there are also crews selected from this group to compete for Australia at the Under 23 World Championships. Ambrose Hennessy, who is currently studying at Boston University, will be involved in these selection trials later in the year.

Riverview 1st XVIII AFL Adelaide Tour

    MR NATHAN STREMPEL, AFL SPC

The Riverview 1st XVIII AFL squad enjoyed a fruitful trip to Adelaide. The students were split into 3 groups of Backs, Mids and Forwards for the trip. They competed in these groups across a variety of activities, including problem-solving rooms, ten-pin bowling, golf, longest drive and mini golf, with a winning group awarded each day. Fittingly, the groups shared the honours evenly, each winning one day. Rewards for winning included dessert treats and upgraded accommodation.

We also facilitated 3 whole-group sessions, teaching from our 1st XVIII AFL handbook and exploring collective leadership and purpose within the group. The students outlined the standards they wanted to set as a group and openly shared times when they had observed others leading in a way that aligned with those standards. The students are to be commended on the vulnerability they displayed in sharing with their teammates.

Then the crux of the trip was the 2 AFL football games. Riverview had the measure of both Scotch College and Westminster School's 1st XVIII.

    Friday April 17
    Riverview College : 10.17-77
    Scotch College : 8.7-55
    Best on Ground: Hudson Savage
Best Players: Noah Duane, Xavier Quoyle, Charlie Pobje, Harry Arnold, Patty McInerney

Harry Arnold nailed the first goal of the season from 50m, and it was clear the View Boys had jumped off the plane ready to go. Charlie Pobje was an absolute force at Centre Half Forward until an ankle injury ended his day prematurely, much to the relief of the Scotch defenders. Noah Duane was the general down back all day. Directing traffic and reading the play better than anyone on a day where our defence would be tested. Patty McInerney's athleticism and run were a difference-maker, showing why the Riverview AFL department had been chasing his signature for years. However, it was Hudson Savage's day. The hard work he'd put in for the pre-season showed as he controlled the game out of the midfield. Regularly winning possession and linking up with his mate Xavier Quoyle up forward, who stepped up significantly once Pobje went down. Savage was awarded Best on Ground by Scotch College, marking the occasion with a traditional Guernsey swap. Rightfully so, Hudson and Xavier were still celebrating the next day, singing Karaoke to Miley Cyrus's "Party in the USA."

    Monday April 20
    Riverview College : 13.14-92
    Westminster School : 5.14-44
    Best on Ground: Josh McMeekin
Best Players: Ed Stewart, Archer' Wayne' Wilson, Charlie Gould, Danny Mackay, Charlie Clifford

Monday was another beautiful day for footy, and the Westminster School field was in immaculate condition. The boys expected to be tested and came out firing, committed to the contest and playing for and with each other. It was an inspiring brand of Riverview AFL football. Often, this is the stage where senior players lead the way; however, many younger students showed they weren't just along for the ride. I could mention more, but to highlight just 2: Ed Stewart has made an enormous leap in the off-season. With a more mature body and confidence to match, he repeatedly won the footy at the contest and then carved Westminster up with his disposal, hitting short 45 targets with pinpoint accuracy on a regular basis. The other was the youngest player on the tour. Year 9 student Charlie Clifford started the game strongly in the midfield and was then shifted to a direct match-up with a senior Westminster player who's also an SA State representative. The Westminster player was playing loose across half back and thwarting all Riverview attempts to goal. Clifford created accountability and won the head-to-head contest so significantly that Westminster were forced to bench the student and move him to a different spot on the ground. Danny Mackay also dominated his head-to-head matchup down back, despite giving up significant size.

In ominous signs for the season, the Riverview forward line was incredibly potent. Many students could be mentioned, but 2 stood out. Archer Wilson was drawing comparisons to the great Wayne Carey off the back of his profound physical dominance. The Westminster back line struggled to find a match-up to contain him, as he looked like he was going to score or set someone up every time the ball was in his area. His performance even earned a shout-out to Wayne' The King' Wilson on the flight home from the Virgin staff. Alongside him, Charlie Gould was absolutely dogged around the contest. Continually fighting to keep the ball in our forward area until a Riverview score was registered.

As mentioned above, Best on Ground was awarded to Josh McMeekin. He was assessed for leather poisoning after the game due to a swag of possession, many of them won at the contest, followed by his burst of speed and instincts, which saw him put separation on the defenders and create attacking opportunities for View. His signature moment of the game was early, when the match was delicately poised and there to be won. Josh gathered possession on the wing and burst into space. 5 bounces later, Josh had burnt numerous would-be defenders and run deep into our forward line to kick a memorable goal, swinging the game in our favour and serving as the catalyst that would see us run away with the contest in the 2nd Half.

Victories against 2 quality South Australian sides give the group strong confidence heading towards Round 1.

The footy experience of the trip was enhanced by heading to Adelaide Oval to watch the Adelaide Crows take on St Kilda. An epic game culminating in an Adelaide Crows one-point win was a wonderful experience for the students. Ben Walker and Will Thrum showed their connectedness by dressing in matching outfits and taking the initiative to educate fans at the Adelaide Oval Hill about on-field examples of the small and big bubbles. Several other students enjoyed the iconic experience of the Adelaide Oval Hill and meeting other South Australian football fans.

As a follow-up to this game, the Adelaide Crows generously invited us to tour their facility on Monday and observe some of the team training. This was a great insight into how a professional AFL team operates.

The students returned to Sydney with a tangible sense of community both on and off the field. We look forward with anticipation to see how this translates on field as the season gets underway in the coming weeks.

MR PETER STEFFAN, SENIOR FOOTBALL TEAMS MANAGER

On Tuesday, 7th April, following the Easter long weekend, Riverview football hosted an Invitational Round Robin of short-format games featuring Trinity Grammar School, St Aloysius’ College and Shore School.

Riverview faced Trinity in the first match of the day and, despite more shots on goal than its opponent, was defeated 2 -0. In the following matches, Aloys defeated Shore 3-1, Trinity returned to the pitch to beat Aloys 2-1, and then Riverview, in the match before the lunch break, defeated Shore 1 - 0 with Sam Ryan scoring the goal.

After the sausage sizzle, Riverview took on Aloys and again lost 2-0, in a performance sapped by the heat of the day in bright autumn sunshine. In the final match, Trinity defeated Shore.

Overall, Trinity Grammar won all three matches, Aloys had two wins, Riverview had one, and Shore had the opportunity to try a few combinations.

In other senior football news, Riverview will face Shore again early in the new term in the second round of the CIS Football Cup, having previously defeated All Saints Grammar 3 - 0 at home during the first term.

Riverview Students Join Choral Pilgrimage To Rome

Chester Johnson (Year 7), Arthur Lusher (Year 11), Jack Wills (Year 7)

In the holidays, three Riverview students and their families travelled to Rome as part of a larger group from the Our Lady of the Way North Sydney parish. There, we took part in a “choral pilgrimage” where the parish choir sang at a variety of masses and concerts over the course of the week. Most notably, we sang for a mass at Saint Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican City.

Other noteworthy performances we did took place across a handful of the many churches of Rome, such as Domus Australia, where Bishop Tony Percy presided, El Oratorio San Francesco Saverio del Caravita, where we performed for the Hon. Keith Pitt, the Australian ambassador to the Holy See, and the Basilica Papale di Santa Maria Maggiore.

Fr Andy Nguyen SJ, a priest from our parish, accompanied us on the trip and led us on an Ignatian tour of the Chiesa di Sant’Ignazio di Loyola and of the Chiesa del Gesù, the mother church of the Society of Jesus, which is where Saint Ignatius is now buried.

The trip was very culturally immersive, with Rome being in the headquarters of Catholicism. Overall, Rome was a wonderful place to stay, and we filled our days with joy, laughter, and lots of gelato.
