    Two Friends of Jesus

    FR TOM RENSHAW SJ

This week we celebrate the feast days of two of Jesus’ closest friends – Mary of Magdala and James, the Apostle. Both were with Jesus at key moments of his life and ministry, including the transfiguration, as well as Jesus’ passion and death, and, in the case of Mary, as the first witness to the resurrection.

Saint Mary appears in the Gospel of Luke where we are told the following:

Soon afterwards he went on through cities and villages, proclaiming and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God. The twelve were with him, as well as some women who had been cured of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, and Joanna, the wife of Herod's steward Chuza, and Susanna, and many others, who provided for them out of their resources (Luke 8:2-3).

Mary was a person who supported Jesus throughout his ministry. In various places, the Gospels record that Jesus was supported by a group of women. Whenever this happens, Mary is listed first. In 591CE, Pope Gregory the First gave a homily suggesting that Mary was a woman of ill repute. The unjust portrayal of Mary in this way persisted for nearly 15 centuries, until modern biblical scholarship quite correctly reclaimed Mary’s role as the first witness to the resurrection of Jesus.

Three of the Gospels – Mark, Matthew and John – tell us that Mary of Magdala was one of the women at the foot of the cross, supporting Jesus as he was crucified. All four of the gospels record Mary going to Jesus’ tomb on the first Easter Sunday.

In Saint John’s Gospel (20:11-18) we have the tender exchange between Jesus and Mary in the garden. Initially Mary mistakes Jesus for being the gardener, but she recognises the risen Jesus when he calls her by name. This beautiful exchange between two friends has led Mary to be known as the first witness to the resurrection. Jesus sends her to the other disciples of the good news of his resurrection. In 2016, Pope Francis elevated the celebration of Saint Mary Magdala from a memorial to a Feast Day and in so doing referred to her unique role as being the “ Apostle of the Apostles ”.

Like Mary, Saint James was one of Jesus’ earliest followers. In the first chapter of Mark’s Gospel, we are told that Jesus calls James and his brother John to follow him, just like two other brothers, Andrew and Peter. The response of each of these four disciples was immediate.

We also know that James was present when Jesus healed Jairus’ daughter (Mark 5:35-43), at the transfiguration of Jesus (Matt 17), and at the agony in the garden of Gethsemane (Matt 26:37). The Gospels tell us that his father was Zebedee and that James’ mother approached Jesus asking if her two sons could sit at his right and left hand, in his kingdom (Matt 20:20-21). In response, Jesus asks James and John whether they are able to drink the cup that he is about to drink and they say yes. James does indeed drink the same cup as Jesus as he is the first apostle to be martyred, being killed by King Herod in the year 44 CE (Acts 12:2).

Following the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus, James ministers to the followers in Jerusalem and is martyred here. However, by the ninth century the tradition or legend about St James evolves to the belief that the followers of James took his body to Spain and he was reburied in Compostela (pictured left). Over the last 10 centuries the burial place of St James in northern Spain has been a significant place of pilgrimage. Thousands of pilgrims walk to Santiago de Compostela each year, searching for meaning in their lives. An experience of this was beautifully depicted in the 2010 film, The Way, produced and directed by Emilio Estevez and starring his father Martin Sheen.

As we celebrate these two great friends of Jesus, two wonderful models of faith, we recall that they embody the theme of the Jubilee Year – Pilgrims of Hope. In being the first witness to Jesus’ resurrection, Mary is the proclaimer and messenger of hope. In drawing upon the legend of St James, we are invited into the notion pilgrimage, of being people who search for and yearn for a deeper relationship with God.

Wishing you every blessing as we begin this new term.

    From our Principal

Welcome back to the College for Term 3

    MR MARK TANNOCK

Welcome back to all families to Term 3 at the College. I trust that the holiday break was regenerative. It was a delight to see all students returning to the College this week.

There were a number of student programs over the holiday period, including a Kairos Retreat, Cambodia Immersions, Snowsports Camp, Year 9 and 11 Holiday Service Programs, HSC Holiday Workshop, Jesuit Debating Carnival, Football Camp, Snowsports Regional Competition and the Rugby Camp. Congratulations to all students who participated and thank you to the staff and parents who supported them in doing so.

I add my warm congratulations to our 1st VIII and their coaches for the commitment over the last 12 months that culminated in the Henley Royal Regatta . Whilst I know the result wasn’t what the boys were hoping for, we are nothing but proud of each of them for their willingness to commit with such depth to the rowing program. A video that captures the story of the 2024/2025 rowing season can be found here .

This term is a significant one for our Year 12s – the Class of 2025 . As with every leaving class, they are our priority as we challenge them to conclude their time as students with the commitment and conscience that should characterise graduates from a Jesuit school. Let us all keep the Year 12s in our prayers as they approach the end of their time at Riverview and the HSC Trials this term and the HSC examinations a little later in the year.

Next week we will share information with families on our plans to occupy and operationalise the superb new Wingaru Building later this term.

I also wanted to take this opportunity to welcome Mrs Gabby Smith , who has joined us as our new Deputy Principal: Students at the College. Mrs Smith has joined us from Waverley College where she held a similar position, and she is particularly well-suited to join our Jesuit school with our deep and abiding commitment to cura personalis that is exercised most profoundly through the House system at Riverview.

    A FAITH THAT DOES JUSTICE

At today’s College Assembly we heard from Jesuit Refugee Service on their vital work in supporting refugees and displaced persons around the world. This is a work of justice. As a Catholic, Jesuit school, our commitment to a more just world is not some woke cause that has appeared in the zeitgeist over the last decade.

Our collective commitment to justice is singularly rooted in the person of Jesus Christ and our faith in his sacrificial love for us – his sisters and brothers. Jesus called on us to “build the Kingdom” and indeed he mentions the Kingdom of God more than anything else in the Gospel. The Kingdom is our collective call to transform our world in the truth and the light of the Gospel.

Our Ignatian tradition emphasises the connection between one’s interior life (including faith) and a commitment to justice.

Justice in the Catholic social tradition is rooted in the recognition of the intrinsic dignity and rights of each person. Rooted in the Gospel, this vision of justice demands a preferential option for those who are oppressed or marginalised—including refugees and those who are unjustly targeted by powerful, self-interested actors.

At their 32nd General Congregation in 1975, the Jesuits named the centrality of ‘a faith that does justice’. Under the leadership of Pedro Arrupe SJ, the Jesuits embraced the commitment to ‘a faith that does justice’ in all their works, including schools. So, when we are asked to support the work of a ministry such as the Jesuit Refugee Service, we are being asked to live out a faith in action. A faith that does justice.

    HIGH EXPECTATIONS

Thank you in advance to all families for your generous support of the College in the coming term. We especially appreciate your support of the College as it relates to the expectations we have of every student at Riverview.

These expectations obviously start with the commitment to their learning in every class, but extend to each boy’s behaviour in the yard and in the boarding house. We expect each young man to be responsible for his own rubbish and to put it in the appropriate bins around the College.

Our high expectations extend to his involvement in our co-curricular program. This should be characterised by the value of commitment.

We have high expectations of his personal presentation including uniform and hair. The way he presents himself is reflective of the status with which he holds the school. His personal presentation should reflect the pride he has in being a Riverview student.

Most importantly, we have high expectations of the manner in which each student relates to his peers and to his teachers. Every member of this community has an inherent dignity, and this should be reflected in our relationships.

Thank you in advance for your support in reinforcing these expectations at home.

    Student Leadership

Message from Angus Martinez, College Captain

As Term 3 begins, it has already proven to be a week of immense activity, pride, and promise for the Riverview community, both on and off the field.

This weekend marks one of the most anticipated sporting fixtures of the year. The 1st XV rugby side will take on King’s at 3:15pm on First Field in a massive top-of-the-table clash. It’s shaping up to be a defining moment in the GPS season, and I urge every student to be there, in full voice, rallying behind the boys. If you haven’t been to a game this season, this is your time. Your support makes a difference. Earlier that morning, the 1st XI football boys will also face King’s at 10:30am on Field 1B. Let’s get down there and show them the same energy. Support doesn’t start and stop with the First XV. It is a whole-school effort.

The holidays also brought huge recognition for our boys selected in NSW and GPS representative rugby squads. Congratulations to the following students who earned selection in their respective teams:

    • Charlie Briggs
    • Jagger Short
    • Riley Jackson

Your selections are a reflection of tireless training, resilience, and the culture of excellence that Riverview strives to uphold. We are all proud of you.

Over the holidays, Riverview competed for the first time in the Henley Royal Regatta , one of the world’s most prestigious rowing competitions. Taking place on the Thames River in England, the event saw our rowers win their first race in dominant fashion before being narrowly defeated in the second round. It was a remarkable debut that put Riverview on the international rowing map. Congratulations to the following boys for their historic performance and composure under pressure:

Henry Burton (cox, captain), Harrison Davis, George Field, Angus McGrath, Harry Kelly, Monty Hyles, Will Bryant, and Julian Carr.

Back on Australian soil, our Firsts debaters travelled to Melbourne to compete in the Jesuit Schools Debating Carnival at Loyola Watsonia. The team went undefeated throughout the preliminary rounds, showcasing outstanding reasoning and teamwork. They ultimately fell just short in the grand final in what was a closely contested and high-calibre debate. Congratulations to team members Alex Bradley (captain), Oliver Lau, and Lazlo Kapel on an inspiring campaign. They now look ahead to their upcoming GPS season which starts on Friday Week 2.

Another significant development over the holidays was the launch of our inaugural HSC Holiday Workshops , organised by Mr Walker and Ms Keeling-Lowe, and assisted by many other members of staff. Many Year 12 students took part, receiving targeted support ahead of Trial examinations. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, and it is encouraging to see such strong student engagement even during the break. Thank you to all staff who gave their time and expertise so generously.

In service and formation, the Kairos #84 retreat took place over the holidays in collaboration with Loreto Normanhurst. As always, Kairos proved to be a space for authenticity, reflection, and the strengthening of relationships. A heartfelt thank you to the staff and student leaders who helped facilitate such a meaningful experience.

Also over the break, two Year 11 Cambodia Immersions were conducted, offering boys the opportunity to engage deeply with communities overseas. These immersions are not about what we give, but how we grow in understanding, gratitude, and solidarity. The boys represented the College with dignity, humility, and generosity of spirit.

This week has also been Refugee Week , culminating in a moving and thought-provoking assembly on Friday. The stories shared were powerful reminders of the courage of displaced people and the importance of empathy, justice, and welcome. I thank all who contributed to making this event as memorable as ever.

Finally, this week also saw the Year 11 cohort vote for the 2026 College Captain and Vice Captains . As the baton of leadership prepares to pass, it is inspiring to see the next year group step forward with passion and purpose. I look forward to working closely with them over the coming term and watching them shape the future of this community.

It has been a start to the term filled with achievement, reflection, and momentum. Whether you are running onto First Field, attending class, serving others, or simply showing up for your mates, keep striving to lift the standard.

We are all a part of what makes this College so special. Let’s continue to support one another and keep building.

    Go View.

    HSC Holiday Workshop Revision Week

MR LLOYD WALKER, DEPUTY PRINCIPAL TEACHING AND LEARNING

During the recent school holidays, our dedicated teaching staff and motivated HSC students came together for a new academic initiative, our HSC Holiday Workshop Revision Week. This initiative, designed to support students in the lead-up to their final exams, featured a series of focused seminars, intensive revision workshops, and realistic practice exams across a wide range of HSC subjects.

Attendance throughout the week was excellent, with many students attending multiple sessions each day. Their engagement and eagerness to improve were clear signs of their commitment to success in the upcoming HSC examinations. The positive atmosphere and strong sense of academic purpose were evident in every room. A reminder to all students that these resources are available online via the Canvas page and students can download all materials including reviewing the recorded sessions at their convenience as part of their ongoing study and revision routines.

A heartfelt thank you goes to all staff involved in making the Holiday Workshop Week possible. Your time, energy, and dedication have made a lasting impact. We congratulate our students for their active participation and wish them the very best as they continue their HSC journey in the lead up to the HSC Trial Examinations which commence in Week 4 this term.

FIGHT MND - The Big Freeze

1ST, 2ND AND 3RD XV PLAYERS AND STAFF

At this week’s home rugby games against King's, the boys in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd XV will run out in ‘The Big Freeze’ beanies. These blue beanies were designed to raise awareness for Motor Neurone Disease, which is an incurable condition that affects the brain and nerves. This disease has affected a number of people within our own community so it will be a particularly meaningful day for the players.

At our rugby camp during the last week of the school holidays, the Senior Rugby squad had the chance to visit the Motor Neurone Disease Research Centre at Macquarie University . It left a mark on all of us. We saw first hand the work of Prof. Dominic Rowe (OR82) and his research team and the effort going into understanding MND so as to find a cure for MND. This excursion really opened our eyes to the unbelievable work of Prof. Rowe and his team.

Students from the Under 16s team will be walking around the grounds collecting EFT and gold coin donations. All proceeds will go to researching a cure for MND. We would be incredibly grateful if you could kindly help and support this cause by making a donation at the Riverview vs Kings fixtures on 1st Field.

If you cannot attend the game, you can also donate HERE .

Also, feel free to purchase an MND beanie online at the Big Freeze Beanie and wear it to the games, with proceeds from this purchase also going straight to MND research.

We thank you very much for your support and hope to see you there.

Riverview rugby players shine on a National Schoolboys Tournament stage!

MR NICK BOUSIE, SPORTS PROGRAM COORDINATOR RUGBY

Celebrating Success in our Riverview Rugby Program

I am absolutely thrilled to share some recent news from within our rugby program. Following recent schoolboys’ rugby tournaments, several of our hard working and dedicated players have achieved noteworthy success in being selected for and representing NSW Schoolboys Rugby at both State and National levels.

In the Opens age group, we are so proud to highlight the efforts and achievements of Daniel Osborne, George Tancred, and Henri Dempsey for their selection and participation in the NSW 1st XV side, which recently clinched victory at the prestigious Australian Schools Championships up on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland during the term holidays. Those boys are part of a hardworking and successful 1st XV here at Riverview and their dedication and skill have truly shone through, bringing honour to the College and its rugby program. So much work and behind the scenes effort goes into these achievements, and we want to recognise that. Well done to Henri, George and Daniel!

Additionally, Angus Grover has once again been chosen for the Australian U18 Training Squad, where Gus will have the opportunity to compete later this year in the National colours. His consistent performance and commitment to the rugby program and life at SIC Riverview, continue to set a high standard for other aspiring student athletes. Well done Angus and may the hard work continue to pay off. It’s worth mentioning that two recent Riverview Old Boys recently represented the Junior Wallabies with great distinction in the World U20 Championships in Northern Italy. Congratulations to Joe Dillon and Liam Grover!

Turning to the Year 10 Under 16 cohort, they are achieving great things as well. In the U16 representative tournament held over the first weekend of the holidays, we are equally delighted to announce the selection of several players into prominent NSW Schoolboys representative sides. Sebastian Conna, Sam Bull, and Ned Attrill were selected in the NSW Under 16 1st XV squad. These boys have been prominent within the GPS squads at Riverview this season.

Further to those selections, Archie Hartman, Henry Salter, Paddy Phillips, Harrison Polin, and Tom Symonds were selected for the U16 NSW 2nd XV team. These Under 16’s selections certainly point to a bright future for Riverview rugby.

These State and National selections reflect not only the individual effort and excellence of these players but also the collective effort and support from our Riverview coaching staff, our rugby families, and the entire Saint Ignatius’ College Riverview community. We are committed to developing well-rounded student-athletes who excel both on and off the field.

Please join me in congratulating these young men on their outstanding achievements. We look forward to their continued success and the positive impact they will undoubtedly have on the future of rugby at Saint Ignatius’ College Riverview.

    LACHLAN CLUBB, YEAR 11 DRAMA

Yesterday the Year 11 Drama cohort was privileged to see Riverside Theatre’s interpretation of the classic Orwellian Dystopian, 1984. The multi-media production was a powerful depiction of the sombre predictions from a postwar (1948) George Orwell, which effectively adapted the themes and concepts of the text, enhanced with the use of theatre elements blurring the line between audience and character. The performance featured many technical and set innovations – some the first of their kind – which will definitely inspire the future performances of our relatively small cohort as we enter our HSC individual and group performances.

    MS JENNIFER POCKNALL, LIBRARIAN

Three brand new books that caught my attention on a visit to the Burns Bay Bookery during the holiday break:

Letters to Our Robot Son : An unexpected story of life, family, hope, and redemption—at the end of the world (maybe). Arto wakes up in a desolate world devoid of humanity—he’s a robot, he knows that much—but he has no memory of how he got here. With a mysterious letter and a cheeky kitten as his only companion, he embarks on a quest to understand his existence. As Arto navigates this unfamiliar landscape, he stumbles upon a cantankerous robot who claims to be his sister. And that's a problem, because she might be the reason there are no more people.

Our Beautiful Boys : I know my son. I know what he is and what he's not capable of. Revelling in the triumph of a high school football win, MJ, Vikram and Diego find themselves at an ill-fated party, on a night that ends with the school bully in hospital. When no one comes forward with the truth of what actually happened, all three teenage “all stars” are suspended for the rest of the season, their futures suddenly uncertain. In the aftermath, the families gather to assess the damage to their children's prospects, their reputations and their own relationships. As other secrets begin to bubble to the surface, each parent attempts to navigate the crisis at hand, confronted with their own inner turmoil and the question none of them want to face: how well can you ever truly know your own child? Our Beautiful Boys is a page-turning and incisive novel about masculinity, race, education and privilege, and the conflict that arises when all these collide.

Next week is Library and Information Week

Library and Information Week is a national celebration of the vital role libraries play in our communities – including school libraries like ours. It’s a chance to recognise how libraries support learning, literacy, and access to information for everyone.

In our library, we know many students love to read – for fun, for learning, or just to relax. But we also understand that choosing to read isn’t always easy. There are a number of barriers that can get in the way, including:

    - Socioeconomic challenges
    - Learning difficulties
    - Limited access to books or devices at home
    - The need for new digital and media literacy skills
    - A lack of time due to busy schedules

So we are shining a spotlight on how libraries – including ours – work to break down these barriers. Across Australia, Library and Information Week highlights:

Research into how and why people read (Australia Reads)

The work being done to support:
    - Adult and youth literacy
    - Media and digital literacy
    - Multicultural and inclusive services
    - Better access for people with disabilities

Here at the College, we want all students to feel confident as readers, researchers, and critical thinkers. Let’s celebrate the power of reading – and the role libraries play in making it possible for everyone.
