    Courage, Love and Service

    FR TOM RENSHAW SJ, RECTOR

In the last week, I have been present for the funeral and memorial service of two Old Boys of the College. One of them had lived a long life, and the other one died in his early 50’s tragically in a light plane crash. At both services, I was moved by the explicit acknowledgement as to how they were both “men for others” and how this sense of service had been instilled during their times as students at the College.

Last week, Fr Arturo Sosa SJ, the Superior General of the Society of Jesus wrote to all the Jesuits in the world advising us of the beatification of Fr Eduard Profittlich SJ, a Jesuit who worked in Estonia, and through his commitment to them, embodied what it means to be a “man for others”. Fr Profittlich will be beatified next week, on 6 September in Tallinn, Estonia. He will then be known as Blessed Eduard Profittlich. In order for him to recognised as a saint of the universal Church, one further miracle will need to be recognised as coming about through people’s devotion to him and through his intercession, arising from their prayerful devotion.

Fr Profittlich was a person of courage, love and service. He was born on 11 September 1890 in Birresdorf in Germany. He was the eighth of ten children, and his parents were farmers. Eduard’s older brother, Peter, had joined the Jesuits and was sent as a missionary to Brazil where he died at the age of 37. Eduard followed in his brother’s footsteps joining the Jesuits in 1913. At this time the Jesuits had been expelled from Germany, so he undertook his formation in the Netherlands, including working in a military hospital for a year during the First World War.

Eduard was ordained a priest in 1922 and continued his studies in Krakow, Poland. He worked for several years as a priest in Poland and then back in his home country of Germany, before being missioned to the Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Tallinn, Estonia.

Within his first year in Estonia, Pope Pius XI, appointed him as the Apostolic Administrator of Estonia. At the time there were about 1000 Catholics in the country. Over the next ten years, Fr Profittlich worked to build the Church in Estonia. He was known to be an effective preacher, writer and theologian. He was committed to ecumenical engagement with the Protestant and Orthodox Churches in Estonia. In 1936, Pope Pius XI appointed him as the Archbishop. In the years that followed, the nascent Church in Estonia grew. However, with the advent of the Second World War, Estonian and its growing Church, faced a time of great hardship with the Soviet occupation, and then the German occupation of the country.

As a person of German origin, Archbishop Profittlich was given the choice of returning to Germany during the Soviet occupation. Following a period of significant discernment, he made the decision to remain in Estonia. At the time he wrote the following to his family back in Germany advising them of his decision,

Even if the future does not look bright from a human point of view, I have decided to stay. After all, it is only right that the shepherd should be with his flock, sharing their happiness and their misfortune. I must say that, even though it took me several weeks to make this decision, I did not do so out of fear or trepidation, but with great joy. And when, in the end, it became clear that I had to stay, my joy was so great that I prayed the Te Deum with gratitude and joy. In general, I felt God’s grace so strongly in my soul that I have rarely felt as happy in my life as I did on that Thursday afternoon after I made my decision; and I have never celebrated Holy Mass with such devotion as I did last Friday, the day after the decision. I would have liked to tell everyone how good God is to us when we give ourselves completely to Him; how happy we can be when we are willing to give everything – our freedom and our lives – to Christ. I am sure that many people have prayed for me during this time, asking God to show me the right path and to grant me His grace generously. (...)

What the future holds, I don’t know. No one can predict the course of events with certainty. But of one thing I am sure right now: God’s will for me is that I remain here, and this makes me happy and I face the future with great hope. Whatever may happen, I know that God will be with me. So, everything will be all right. And my life and – if it should be so – my death will be a life and a death for Christ. (...) This would be the most beautiful end to my life.

Archbishop Profittlich did not know what the future would hold, but in the face of extraordinary adversity he courageously loved and served the people that had been entrusted to his care. In June 1941, he was arrested and deported to Russia. He was tortured and interrogated and charged with espionage and counter-revolutionary activity against the Soviet Union and sentenced to death. However, he was not executed, but rather he died in prison, on 22 February 1942,  because of the suffering he endured for living out his faith and remaining completely devoted to Christ and the people of Estonia.  Through his life of courage, love and service Blessed Eduard Profittlich SJ modelled for us one way of being a person for and with others.

    Wishing you every blessing.

    Excellence in Faith and Sport

    MR MARK TANNOCK, PRINCIPAL

The Archbishop of Sydney Award for Student Excellence was inaugurated in 1999. They are presented annually to a recipient from the one of the 57 different Catholic secondary schools within the Archdiocese of Sydney. These include Independent (or ‘Congregational’) Catholic schools like Saint Ignatius’ College Riverview and systemic Catholic schools. They recognise young people throughout our city who demonstrate a great commitment to their faith and its lived expression.

There is a return to faith occurring for many young people within our community and these Awards highlight this movement. At Riverview, we are seeing larger numbers of boys keen to actively engage in their faith with their heads, hands and hearts. Therefore, there were many worthy recipients of this award amongst the graduating class of 2025 who are finishing their Trial HSC Examinations today.

The 2025 recipient from Riverview is Robert Dimitrov-Johnson . Robert began his journey at Saint Ignatius’ College Riverview, as a Year 5 student in 2018 and has since become a vibrant part of the school community. This year he served as Liturgy Captain, is an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion and faithfully supports College Masses as an Altar Server. His Christian leadership recently shone through when he guided Year 11 students through their Day of Reflection and had the added benefit of deepening his own faith while doing so. Robert also participated in two transformative Kairos retreats, which he now advocates for by sharing his testimony with his peers.

Recently, Robert joined fellow students in a meaningful conversation with Fr Tom when they explored the challenges young people face and how their faith shapes life’s decisions. Beyond school, he remains actively involved at the Holy Family Catholic Church, Lindfield, is a lector and a member of the local Youth Group. He helped organise powerful Good Friday Passion re-enactments. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he compassionately crafted and delivered greeting cards to elderly parishioners, bringing warmth and hope to the community. I had the pleasure of reading Robert’s citation at Tuesday’s Awards Ceremony at St Mary’s Cathedral and congratulate him on actively seeking God in all things and developing a faith that does justice.

As many in the community know, our First XVIII AFL team won the Independent Schools' Cup Premiership with a grand final victory over Waverley College a fortnight ago. This is the program’s second consecutive success of this kind. As such, the College has qualified for the State Final to be held in Gungahlin next Tuesday, 2 September and the players and coaches will be travelling overnight to compete. Our team competed in this event last year and were fortunate enough to come away with the win. Congratulations to players and coaches (SPC Nathan Strempel, 1st XVIII Head Coach Andrew Wild, Assistant Coaches Nick Hay, Max Toohey and Cooper Donald, Rotations Pat Browne and Runner Matt Sidhu) and best wishes to the team on Tuesday:

Keeping the Momentum – Preparing for the HSC with Purpose

MS JO KEELING-LOWE, DEAN OF TEACHING AND LEARNING

"Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out." – Robert Collier

With only seven weeks until the HSC begins in October, our Year 12 students stand at a pivotal point in their journey. The Trial Examinations are now behind them, but their true purpose is not merely assessment. The Trials are a diagnostic tool, a mirror held up to learning, designed to show our students clearly where their strengths lie and where they need to focus their attention in the weeks ahead. To ignore this would be to waste a precious opportunity.

Momentum is built not in grand gestures but in daily habits. Attending weekly tutorials, submitting past papers for feedback, leaning into difficult questions, and sharing well-written work with peers are not signs of competition but of collaboration. Formation happens best in community: students are encouraged to bring each other up, to study together, to challenge one another, and to recognise that education is never a solo journey.

The Year 12 Mass, the Year group photo, individual House Valetes, and the 2025 Valete Assembly are not distractions but integral moments of the Saint Ignatius’ College Riverview Graduate experience. These milestones mark the closing weeks of a student's journey and serve as reminders that to “graduate well” is about more than results, it is about gratitude, joy, and community. Balancing celebration with commitment requires maturity, but it is also the hallmark of an Ignatian graduate, open to growth, reflective, and engaged in the world.

In the weeks ahead, every choice matters. Seven weeks is both a long time and a short time, long enough to strengthen weak areas, refine essay skills, practise past papers, and deepen understanding, but short enough that procrastination cannot be afforded. Each week is an opportunity to build layers of readiness, sharpening both skills and mindset.

Our message to Year 12 is simple: use your Trials not as a verdict but as a roadmap. Stay focused, lean on one another, seek help when needed, and never underestimate the power of persistence. Graduate not only with results you are proud of, but with the knowledge that you have worked together, supported one another, and lived the values of an Ignatian education. That is the true measure of success.

    National Skills Week

    MS DONNA JONES, CAREERS ADVISOR

Why Skills Matter for Your Future.

National Skills Week celebrates vocational education, training, and the development of practical skills that are essential for many careers. In today’s fast-changing world, having strong skills, whether in trades, technology, healthcare, the arts, or business, is key to unlocking job opportunities and building a successful future.

Many students assume university is the only pathway, but vocational education and training (VET) offers valuable, hands-on learning experiences that can lead directly to apprenticeships, traineeships, and rewarding careers.

If you’re thinking about your next steps after school, here are some useful resources to help you explore vocational pathways:

    • My Skills ( www.myskills.gov.au ) Search for courses and training providers across Australia to find options that suit your interests.
    • Australian Apprenticeships ( www.australianapprenticeships.gov.au ) Information about apprenticeships and traineeships, including how to apply.
    • Skills Road ( www.skillsroad.com.au ) Offers career advice, quizzes, and profiles to help you discover your strengths and potential career paths.
    • Skills One ( www.skillsone.com.au ) Offers entertaining and educational videos about all kinds of professions in any skill area.

Remember, developing skills is about more than just jobs—it’s about building confidence, adaptability, and opportunities for lifelong learning. Whether you choose university, vocational training, or a combination of both, investing in your skills is a critical step that will help you succeed.

    AFL 1st, 2nd and 9/10 Division Grand Finals Wrap-up

MR NATHAN STREMPEL, AFL SPORTS PROGRAM COORDINATOR

    1st XVIII Grand Final: Riverview 5.10 – 40 def Waverley 4.9 - 33

Our 1st XVIII went into the Grand Final as underdogs. Having been beaten twice during the season by Waverley. In the Grand Final however Riverview performed as the better team all game with superior effort and intensity combined with a game plan that Waverley had no response to. When tested in the last quarter, the team displayed resilience, bravery and discipline to hold their nerve despite Waverley edging in front. The masterstroke came when both players and coaches trusted the move of swinging our centre half back to the forward line to kick the go ahead goal. A huge moment for Antonio Hartman. Jasper Sinclair was immense, particularly in the last quarter to win the best on ground medal. Will Morahan and Henry Meaney also with a huge impact on the entire game, playing through cramps towards the end to find a way to carry us over the line. A significant team effort by all. Thank you to the significant amount of staff, students and parents that came out to Blacktown to support the group. The rousing rendition of Galilee Song with minutes remaining was truly something special.

The team has now earnt the right to compete in the NSW AFL State Final in Canberra at 1130am on September 2nd. The match is against Xavier College, Albury, a rematch of last year’s State Final where Riverview was successful in clinching the title of NSW State Champions. Can the boys go back to back as State Champions. Keep your eyes peeled for details of the livestream where you can follow the game and cheer the team on.

    2nd XVIII Grand Final: Riverview 6.7 – 43 def Newington 6.6 – 42 in Double Overtime

As far epic matches go, the bar was set high by the 1st XVIII with their Friday night Grand Final win. The 2nd XVIII went about matching it with a Grand Final for the ages that took two overtime periods to be able to separate the teams. I was so happy to see this 2nd XVIII team finish the season on a high after having to grind against other schools 1st XVIII sides for a large percentage of the season. What an incredible game this was to play in let alone for our team to get the result.

Riverview was down for a large amount of the game but kept finding a way to fight back. Riverview drew level with only minutes remaining and with neither side able to break the deadlock, scores were tied at the end of the 4th quarter. Newington kicked an early goal in the 5 minute overtime period but again Riverview fought back via a Charlie Caine major to see the scores tied again at the end of the 5 minute overtime. In the second overtime period it was again Charlie Caine who kicked the most important point of his career to have the team in front by a point which would end up being the final margin at the close of the second overtime! Charlie Caine kicking the teams entire score in both overtime periods and Riverview being crowned Premiers. Xavier Browne and Tom Poynton did a mountain of contested work all game and in particular down the stretch. Xavier Donohue lead with poise, James Rees-Woods gave everything to a tagging assignment and Jonas Mason went to work in the ruck. Another all-round team effort to finish the season with a heart stopper!

    Year 9/10 Division 1 Grand Final - Waverley 6.12 (48) defeated Riverview 5.6 (36)

The future is bright for AFL at Riverview. The courage, spirit and determination shown by the 9/10 A’s in their Grand Final was nothing short of inspirational. On a Friday night under lights against a Waverley side that was loaded with talent, this Riverview group was simply tougher at the contest. Widely regarded as heavy underdogs going into the game this group of students refused to take a backwards step. Inspired by the coaching of 2023 1st XVIII Captain Matt Sidhu these boys were up for the challenge and lead on several occasions throughout the contest.

Harry Arnold and Ed Stewart showed why they played a lot of 1st XVIII footy with the way they regularly won the ball and used it well. The natural forward craft of Henry Hay alongside Lado Kuron, the tallest small forward in AFL history, Xavier Quoyle and Luca ‘Chippa’ Rogers repeatedly impacted the scoreboard and kept Riverview looking dangerous. The form and athleticism of Lachlan McCullagh had everyone wondering what might have been for him this season if not interrupted by injury while also excited for what is to come. What stood out though was the ‘man for others’ brotherhood and inside grunt work, headlined on this occasion by Hugh Taylor and Pat Cleary joined by a long list of others that showed a genuine desire to play for their mates. Captained by Jude Feilen, this group inspired many and left no doubt that the proud tradition of 1st XVIII AFL sides at Riverview is sure to continue in years to come.

With a goal in it with a few minutes remaining it was a couple of half chances missed that saw the result go Waverley’s way on this occasion but with Hudson Savage to return from injury next season and a number of other students inspired to throw their name in the mix, this group is sure to be ready when a re-match with Waverley comes their way.

Thank you to all of the parents, staff and students that came to Gore Hill to support the students on the night.

    Canteen Farewell

    MRS MICHELE LAW, CANTEEN MANAGER

At 2pm today, Friday August 29, 2025, we close the doors to the senior canteen for the final time. The administration building and canteen were blessed and opened on April 23, 1972, by Archbishop Dr Freeman as part of the Forward View Building Project. For 52 years we have celebrated the highs and lows of school life at Riverview with food.

Many past students will fondly remember the senior canteen for the afternoon boarder openings twice a week, selling all kinds of sweets, chocolate bars and drinks. Buckets of red frogs have been sold over the years and there was a mass outcry when we no longer sold them.

The canteen has been a focal point for our wonderful parents and carers who have volunteered their time to serve the boys. We wish to thank every person who has walked through these doors over the last 52 years. My mother-in-law Maria Law (Hendriks) volunteered from 1974-1979. Sadly, I never met her but I feel the connection to her in here. I also volunteered as a boarder parent then a day parent whilst my sons were students at Riverview. Our current staff- Kate Doust, Silvia Alexander, Anita Ward, Brigitta de Laet, Eithy Ng and Sam Garling are also past and present parents. It has provided every staff member and volunteer with the gift of a special connection to their son.

So today we close the door to this chapter of school history. It is with great sadness, but also immense gratitude for the gift of the Wingaru canteen and all the anticipation and excitement that comes with new beginnings.

Sincere and heartfelt thanks to every staff member and volunteer. It is your dedication to the service of our students that will continue the legacy of a strong and vibrant community. The joy of our special space will embrace every student for many years into the bright future of Saint Ignatius' College Riverview.

    Year 8 Boarding: Boarding Trial

    FINN GIBSON & TEDDY BOISVERT

The Riverview boarding trial has been such an incredible experience for those of us who participated this week. Since arriving on Sunday, the boarders have welcomed us and shown us the ropes. I think we have all enjoyed the routine because there’s always something to do. So far, there hasn't been a dull moment. It's so fun being around all the boys and learning their experiences so far in the house. It’s been great to get to know firsthand how the boarders spend their days.

The boarders’ experience is far different to us day boys, mainly because everything is done as a group - from waking up, getting ready, and walking over to breaky, to arriving back to the boarding house together in the afternoon and playing outside before we get into study. After study, it’s off to dinner in the ref, where we all sit together, eat, and chat. After dinner, we head to the Gartlan for a swim or to play basketball. There are always plenty of opportunities like this to spend time and have fun with mates.

The chance to try something new and live a different routine has been fun and interesting for us all. The days are structured and it’s easy to stay organised. The routine felt balanced and gave time to focus on schoolwork but also to relax and spend time with others, which kept us all busy and made the days feel productive and enjoyable. There’s also a great sense of independence, and we’ve enjoyed taking on personal responsibilities in the house.

Overall, we’ve all had a great time in the Year 8 Division this week, and have learned a lot about ourselves and others along the way.

    Boarding Proctor Investiture Mass

Recently, we celebrated the Investiture of our new Boarding Leaders. Surrounded by family, staff, and fellow boarders, our leaders were commissioned in a special Mass that recognised their commitment to service, responsibility, and care for others.

In the Jesuit tradition, leadership is not about titles, but about serving with love, humility, and courage. Our Boarding Leaders now take on the privilege of guiding their younger brothers, modelling integrity, and building the bonds of community that make boarding a home away from home.

We congratulate each of our leaders and look forward to the year ahead as they step into this important role!

    Christopher Brennan Library

What's new at the Christopher Brennan Library?

    MS JENNIFER POCKNALL, LIBRARIAN

    What’s new?

Book of Bravery , a novel written by James Burke (1987): I'm not of your world, but I had a front-row seat to a little-known drama that nearly brought about your demise. Truth be told, I've actually been wanting to tell you about this saga for some time. It's a short tale, relatively speaking. It does, though, begin before the birth of Christ. There's a man named Quintus at the heart of it. First, he was a Roman Centurion, that is, until he ended up in China where he learned a thing or two from an old Taoist. Fast forward to today, and he still walks among you. You should know what he did through history wasn't done for himself, it was done for you, and it was done in the face of the greatest evil known to mankind.

    What’s happening?

Congratulations to Charles (Year 7) who borrowed a book during Book Week and went into the draw to successfully win a jar of ‘book worms’.
