    Peace with Creation

    FR TOM RENSHAW SJ, RECTOR

Earlier this week, we began the Season of Creation. This is a time to renew our relationship with our Creator and all creation through celebration, conversion, and commitment. Over the next month we are invited to pray for a deepening sense of peace with creation, finishing with the feast of St Francis of Assisi on 4 October.

The season of creation began with the initiative of the Ecumenical Patriarch Dimitrios I who proclaimed 1 September as a day of prayer in 1989. The World Council of Churches extended this day of prayer to a season of creation. In 2015, Pope Francis established the World Day of Prayer for Creation in 2015 within the Catholic Church and embraced the Season of Creation in 2019.  This built upon his commitment to caring for our common home articulated in his 2015 encyclical, Laudato Si.

The symbol for this year’s celebration is a dove carrying an olive branch bringing life to the Garden of Peace. It draws upon the story of the flood and Noah that is found in the Book of Genesis. Noah and many different types of animals are in the ark waiting for the flood waters to recede and the dove plays the role of the messenger. The dove is the bearer of good news as it returns to Noah in the ark with a fresh olive branch in its beak, signalling that the flood is receding. The olive branch is also a symbol of peace, as the earth is no loner filled with violence.

Throughout this season of creation, we are invited to pray over the following text from the prophet Isaiah,

“ For the palace will be forsaken, the populous city deserted; the hill and the watchtower will become dens forever, the joy of wild asses, a pasture for flocks. Until a spirit from on high is poured out on us, and the wilderness becomes a fruitful field, and the fruitful field is deemed a forest. Then justice will dwell in the wilderness and righteousness abide in the fruitful field. The effect of righteousness will be peace, and the result of righteousness, quietness, and trust forever. My people will abide in a peaceful habitation, in secure dwellings, and in quiet resting places.” Isaiah 32:14-18

In sharing this choice of text, the Season of Creation team stated that, “there is hope for a peaceful Earth. Biblically, hope is active—it involves prayer, action, and reconciling with Creation and the Creator through repentance (metanoia) and solidarity. Isaiah 32:14-18 envisions a peaceful Creation where God’s people live only when justice is achieved.”

Earlier today at lunchtime we held our Inter-House Season of Creation Art Competition. Over 30 students from Years 9 and 10 shared their creativity and artistic ability to bring to life the theme of Peace with Creation. The artwork from each house wwas judged using the following four criteria:

    1. Theme Alignment to “Peace with Creation”;
    2. Creativity and Originality;
    3. Use of Recycled Materials such as bottles, fabrics, cardboard, glass, reclaimed wood; and
    4. Community Engagement ability to convey the message clearly and captivate a wide audience.

The winner of this competition will be announced next week.

As we ponder the theme of peace with creation, may we also remember the need for peace within our created world, especially in the Middle East, between Russia and Ukraine, within Myanmar and between Cambodia and Thailand.

This Sunday we celebrate Father’s Day. Thank you to the fathers and grandfathers, as well as those other men who are significant father figures, within our community. May we savour the gift that fatherhood is in our lives.

Looking forward to seeing many of you at the Jesuit Mission Bazaar on Saturday 13 September.

    Wishing you all every blessing.

Showcasing Talent and Commitment in the Class of 2025

    MR MARK TANNOCK, PRINCIPAL

Year 12s returned to classes this week after their trial HSC Exams. The Class of 2025 are a fine group of young men and young men they have become. No longer schoolboys, our-soon-to-be Old Boys are ready to graduate from the school that they love. Senior leaders met with them as a Year Group this week and encouraged them to make the most of the opportunities that are still available in their final weeks. The greatest opportunity is to improve their academic performance in the lead up to the HSC Examinations in October and November. Experience suggests that real value can be added to an individual’s academic performance with only 50% of their assessment for each course being complete.

Just as importantly, we want the graduating students to make good decisions about how they want to be remembered both individually and collectively. The manner in which you leave shapes the way you are remembered. And so, the young men were encouraged to leave the College in the manner that they want to be remembered. Our message to them was simplified into making good decisions, keeping standards high, and maintaining commitment until the final exam.

The HSC Showcase for Industrial Technology – Timber was held in Memorial Hall during the week. The quality of the students’ craftsmanship was particularly impressive, and it was a joy to see the quality of the work that has resulted from hundreds of hours of commitment. Congratulations to the following students:

    • James Armour
    • Louie Arrowsmith
    • Indy Beck
    • Alexander Forlico
    • Max Graham
    • Frederick Hartson
    • Montague Hyles
    • James Munro

    • Maurice Hyles
    • Kynan Lascalles
    • Darcy Macpherson
    • Thomas Makim
    • Hamish McRobbie
    • William O'Keefe

Additionally, this week, the HSC Music Showcase was held in The Woods. Congratulations to the following Year 12 Music students on their performances, and we thank them for their willingness to share their gifts in this manner

    Music 1

    • Matteo El Haddad (Piano)
    • Josh Marzullo (Guitar)
    • Ahran Grimes (Bass Guitar)
    • Daniel Osborne (Drum Kit)
    • Archie Delany (Voice)

    Music 2

    • Raymond Teng (Violin)
    • Nelson Meehan (Clarinet)

Music is an essential dimension of our mission as a Jesuit school, as it has been since we were established in 1880. We are very keen to see Music flourish as both an academic subject and as a co-curricular pursuit in the years ahead.

Ignatius Meagher (Year 10, Fernando), Luke Jacobs (Year 10, Teresa), Will Thomas (Year 10, Romero), and Sam Fitzimmons (Year 8, MacKillop) are in a band called ‘The Live Wires’. They recently performed at the Battle of the Bands at the Loreto Kirribilli Spring Fair over the weekend and secured first place. Their next performance will be next Saturday 13 September at the Jesuit Mission Bazaar on the Main Stage. Again, we thank these boys for their willingness to share their gifts.

The College is very much looking forward to hosting the Jesuit Mission Bazaar next weekend and we thank, in advance, the hundreds of volunteers who will work tirelessly in preparation for such a worthy cause. We encourage all members of our community to attend the Bazaar and support the work of Jesuit Mission in developing nations around the world.

    P&F Update - Term 3 Week 7

MRS LEESA FEILEN, P&F PRESIDENT 2025

First Friday Mass & Reflection on the Feast of Saint Mother Teresa

Today, our school community gathered for First Friday Mass in Dalton Chapel. It was a particularly moving celebration for many of us, especially the mothers of Year 12 sons, who are completing their journey at the College — boys who arrived as pre-teens and now prepare to leave as young men.

As always, Fr Tom delivered a thoughtful homily that resonated with mothers and carers. He honoured Saint Mother Teresa, reminding us of the power of small acts of love. As a “mother” to so many, she showed tenderness, forgiveness, and selfless care — always seeing “Jesus in disguise” in the poorest and most vulnerable.

Her life of service mirrors our Ignatian spirituality of being people for others. Like the Jesuits, Mother Teresa showed us that love becomes real when expressed in action.

As a P&F community, we share in this mission — to support, encourage, and serve one another so that every person may flourish. Her example invites us to carry compassion and generosity into our daily lives.

It is truly a privilege to belong to such a wonderful community — a gift for our families and a source of strength in times of uncertainty. As Term 3 draws to a close, there is much to be grateful for, much to contribute, and countless friendships to treasure.

With spring in the air comes hope and renewal. The P&F Committee wishes you joy in these days, and we encourage you to embrace each moment at this beautiful school — it really does pass too quickly.

    Student Leadership

Message from Matteo Milozzi, Fernando House Captain

This week has highlighted the many different ways our community continues to grow, compete, and celebrate together.

Our 1st XVIII AFL boys travelled to Canberra for the State Championships a tremendous achievement in itself. The team showed great courage, determination, and pride in representing Riverview. While the final result was not in our favour, the lessons of resilience and teamwork will stay with the players well beyond the season.

Year 12s have now returned from their Trial Examinations, completing a demanding period of focus and perseverance. This milestone not only prepares them academically for the HSC, but also shows their ability to stay disciplined under pressure. Their efforts set a strong example for the rest of the College.

Meanwhile, Year 11 students are beginning to step into their leadership journey. Through mentor groups, House activities, and wider contributions, they are finding their voice and shaping the kind of leaders they will become. It is encouraging to see their initiative and energy already making an impact.

September is also the Season of Creation, a time when Christians around the world give thanks for God’s gift of Creation and renew our shared commitment to care for our common home. In that spirit, we are excited to launch the Inter-House Art Competition this Friday lunch at the old canteen steps, inviting Yr 9 and 10 students to construct an art installation out of recycled materials to reflect on stewardship, beauty, and care for the environment.

Finally, next Monday the College will gather for the Athletics Carnival, it is always one of the most anticipated days of the year. It is a chance for students to compete, for House spirit to shine, and for our community to come together in celebration. We look forward to a day filled with energy, encouragement, and enjoyment for all.

St Canice’s Kitchen Backyard Winter Sleepout 2025

MS MEG MORRISON, FAITH IN SERVICE COORDINATOR

The 2025 St Canice’s Kitchen Backyard Winter Sleepout took place on the evening of Saturday, 23 August, through to Sunday morning. The event gave students a brief but powerful insight into the challenges faced by people experiencing homelessness, while raising awareness and over $23,000 for the vital work of St Canice’s Kitchen.

This year, 190 Year 8 and Year 9 students participated. The feedback clearly demonstrated that the Sleepout had a significant impact, deepening students’ empathy and understanding of the challenges faced by people living rough - “I now understand how hard it is to sleep when you feel unsafe. Having little food helped me see how tough hunger really is. The constant interruptions showed me how exhausting broken sleep can be.” JT Year 8

Many students also reflected on the emotional toll of homelessness, especially the isolation and loneliness:

“Homelessness often comes with isolation. Having family and friends for emotional, financial, or practical support is something many people don’t have. This experience helped me realise how important relationships and community really are.” LP Year 9

The vast majority of participants said they would recommend the Backyard Winter Sleepout to others:

“Yes, I would recommend this experience to other students because it builds empathy and understanding for people experiencing homelessness, makes us more grateful for what we have, and encourages us to take action to help those in need.”

IPSHA Social Action Expo at Regis

MR DAVID GUILD, STAGE 3 CLASSROOM TEACHER

On Wednesday, September 3rd, Regis proudly hosted the IPSHA Social Action Expo, an event that brought together students from across Sydney to showcase the initiatives they are leading to create positive change in their communities. Representing our school were twelve passionate Year 6 students who have demonstrated a strong commitment to social action and service.

Throughout the day, students were inspired by presentations from leading social justice organisations, including SchoolAid, Cana Communities, and the B Kinder Foundation. Our local Mayor, Clr Merri Southwood, also shared her experiences in community leadership, encouraging students to see the powerful role they can play in shaping a brighter future. A central theme of the day was ‘in-reach’—the idea that supporting others not only benefits them but also strengthens and uplifts ourselves.

A particularly moving moment was a presentation by Margaret and Leigh from Cana Communities. Leigh courageously shared his journey through hardship, homelessness, and imprisonment, and spoke of how Cana’s care and ongoing support have helped him rebuild his confidence and stability. His story left a deep impression on all who were present, illustrating the transformative power of compassion and connection.

The Expo concluded with our students proudly presenting Regis’ own social action initiatives, including our ongoing partnership with Redfern Jarjum College. Though initially nervous, our boys spoke with confidence and were met with warm feedback from visitors. They enjoyed exploring displays from other schools, exchanging ideas, and sharing their insights with Mr Tannock, who stopped by to hear about their projects.

This year’s Social Action Expo was a powerful reminder of the impact that empathy, service, and community can have in shaping a better world. We are incredibly proud of our Year 6 leaders for their confidence, initiative, and dedication to making a difference.

    Rugby News - Fantastic Achievements

    MR NICK BOUSIE, RUGBY SPC

This season we are proud to add yet another undefeated side to Riverview’s long list of success stories in 2025 – the 16E team, brilliantly coached by Thomas Dredge. Their achievement is particularly impressive given they were regularly competing against teams one, and at times even two, divisions higher. This feat underlines the strength and depth of the U16 age group, which already boasts the 16A and 16B sides as undefeated premiership winners.

On the representative stage, we celebrate the remarkable accomplishments of our players at the national level. George Tancred has been selected in the Australian Schoolboys team to face Fiji Schoolboys and the Australian U18s in early October – a wonderful acknowledgement of his hard work and consistency. In addition, we extend our warm congratulations to Angus Grover and Brody Folkes, who have been chosen in the Wallaby U18 side to play New Zealand Schools later this term.

These selections are a fitting recognition of their talent, dedication, and contribution to Riverview Rugby’s premiership-winning season. Well done to all.

NSW AFL State Final – Saint Ignatius’ College Riverview vs Xavier Catholic College, Albury

    MR NATHAN STREMPEL, AFL SPC

The Senior Schools state final saw Riverview and Xavier Catholic College, Albury, meet at Gungahlin, Canberra, for the second straight year. A tight opening half saw the Xavier boys take a 2-point lead at the main break, mainly due to some accurate goal kicking. Josh McMeekin, Henry Meaney and Heath Mercer led the Viewboys from the front in the first half. The second half was a back-and-forth tussle with each contest being of utmost significance. Ethan Nandlal and Will Morahan stepped up to the challenge, winning crucial one-on-ones.

Following two straight goals from Darcy Feilen, Riverview had a two-goal lead and spirits were high. Last year, it was five unanswered goals from Riverview that closed the match and secured the State Title. Sadly, that situation was reversed this year, and Xavier was too strong, coming over the top down the stretch. Riverview were valiant in their effort at the contest but were unable to capitalise on scoring chances going forward. Xavier were clinical in their execution and transition off turnovers, coming home strong to finish the match on top, 9.3 - 57 def 5.9 – 39. In what will be the final game for the class of 2025, they can hold their heads high. While it wasn’t to be our day, they competed right to the end and fought for each other.

A big thank you to the significant number of Year 12s in the team and their families for their effort and dedication over many years. With the score now tied at 1-1 between Riverview and Xavier, hopefully the returning students on the side are inspired to try and go one better next season.

    State Interschool Snowsports Championships

    MR ANTHONY COOK, SNOWSPORTS SPC

A talented team of 16 Riverview student athletes travelled to Perisher to contest the State Interschools Snowsports Championships. After an outstanding performance at Regionals in Thredbo, our skiers and snowboarders arrived well-prepared and eager to test themselves against the best competitors in New South Wales. Their determination, skill, and sportsmanship across all divisions made the College proud.

    Division 4 (Years 5–6)

Our youngest competitors — Ben Hodgkinson, Will Longley, Austin Williams, and AJ Hood — represented Riverview with pride in the Alpine events. Ben delivered an excellent performance, placing 14th overall and qualifying for Nationals at Mt Buller.

The highlight of Division 4 was undoubtedly Ben Hodgkinson’s gold medal in the Moguls. With a flawless second run, Ben claimed top spot and secured his place among the state’s best. All of our Regis skiers are to be congratulated for their enthusiasm, commitment, and team spirit.

    Division 3 (Years 7–8)

One of Riverview’s strongest divisions, our team included Richie De Angelis, Charlie Salter, Bill O’Rourke, and Noah Byrne on skis, alongside Charlie Maynes in snowboarding. Impressively, every one of them qualified for Nationals — a remarkable achievement.

    Highlights included:

    • The Ski Cross team (Richie, Charlie Salter, Bill) winning bronze.
    • A near-podium finish in the Alpine team event, placing 4th by the narrowest of margins.
    • Charlie Maynes with a top-20 finish in Snowboard GS, earning his place at Nationals.
    • Bill O’Rourke’s individual bronze medal in Moguls, a just reward for his persistent dedication and training.

    Division 2 (Years 9–10)

In one of the most competitive age groups, Riverview once again performed strongly:

    • The Alpine team of Henry Salter, Lachlan DeAngelis, Austin Smoker, and Iggy Kong secured bronze, following up their silver at Regionals.
    • In Ski Cross, Lachlan, Charlie, and Iggy claimed the silver medal, a brilliant result against tough opposition.
    • Billy Cleary impressed in the Snowboard Cross, producing two strong runs on a demanding course in challenging conditions.

This division showcased resilience, teamwork, and great promise ahead of Nationals.

    Division 1 (Years 11–12)

Our senior competitors demonstrated skill and leadership in an extremely tough field.

    • Snowsports Captain, Julian DeAngelis, capped off his final year with a qualification for Nationals in Alpine. On one of the most technical and unforgiving courses seen at an interschools event, Julian showed composure and strength to complete both runs successfully and secure his place at Nationals.
    • Jarvis Smoker defended his State title in the Snowboard GS Multi-Class, claiming gold once again. His outstanding performance sees him qualify for the National Multi-Class event at Mt Buller.

We extend our warmest congratulations to all our competitors — and to their families for their unwavering support. To have 13 Riverview athletes qualify for Nationals is an exceptional achievement, and we wish them the very best as they prepare to represent the

Donate to the OIU Wine Auction for the Jesuit Mission Bazaar

One of the absolute highlights of the Jesuit Mission Bazaar is the legendary OIU Wine Auction – the single biggest contributor to Jesuit Mission’s life-changing work across the world.

But here’s the thing… it only works because of YOU. The Auction depends on the generous wine donations of our Old Boys – and that’s where we need your help!

    How you can support:

    • Head to your cellar, your favourite bottle-o, or your online wine site and pick out some bottles (or a case or two!).
    • Drop them off at either:
      • Ron Dyer Centre , 42 Ridge Street, North Sydney (behind St Mary’s)
      • Paul Brogan’s house , 12 Mooramba Ave, Riverview (contact Paul on 9428 4958 or paulbrogan@optusnet.com.au to arrange)
      • Saint Ignatius' College Riverview First Field Kiss and Ride from 7:45am - 8:30am - A Jesuit Mission staff member in an orange apron will be waiting. Please do not send students to school with donations in their bags.

Every bottle donated helps fuel Jesuit Mission’s extraordinary work from East Timor to Kenya, while also making sure the Auction is a spirited success.

Let’s make this year’s Wine Auction the biggest and best yet.

    Christopher Brennan Library

What's new at the Christopher Brennan Library?

    MS JENNIFER POCKNALL, LIBRARIAN

A new book in one of the most popular areas of the library, Ultimate Fishing Australia .

A collection of 40 of the best spots to cast a line. Lifelong fisher and marine scientist Indy Thompson has scoured the coastlines, bringing together a collection of noteworthy experiences for amateur and experienced anglers. Fishing is often as much about enjoying the outdoors and location as it is about reeling in the big catch, and this book ties great locations with great catch opportunities. From Jervis Bay in New South Wales, Eaglehawk Neck in Tasmania and Exmouth in Western Australia to the fishing mecca of Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory, there are diverse fishing opportunities around the country for readers to discover. Indy also provides helpful information on when to visit, what to bring, and, importantly, what catch you will find.

    What’s on?

Year 11 Studies of Religion II classes have been making great use of the library and its resources while exploring their unit on Religion in Australia pre-1945 . The supporting Libguide is available HERE .

Meanwhile, Year 10 History students have been preparing speeches on the Cold War, supported by a curated collection of library books and a dedicated Libguide, available HERE .

A reminder that the library is open before school from 7:40am , and after school until 6:00pm Monday to Thursday, and until 4:00pm on Fridays. Students are encouraged to make the most of this time for study, research, or quiet reading.

Congratulations to Jack Mulveney for winning our bookmark competition. With Canva he used his imagination and added many elements to create a fun design.

Congratulations to Joe Gilles whose name was drawn from all the entries to win the final prize in our ‘Today’s First Line’ competition.

    Caring for our Common Home

    Season of Creation Inter-House Competition

    MS STEPHANIE VARDAS, SUSTAINABILITY COORDINATOR

The Season of Creation is celebrated each year during the month of September. It is a time when Christians across the globe unite in prayer and action to give thanks for God’s gift of Creation and to renew our shared commitment to Care for our Common Home. The theme for 2025 is “Peace with Creation” which calls us to reflect on humanity’s role in promoting ecological healing. The chosen symbol is the “Garden of Peace,” a powerful image of a transformed and fertile world where justice and harmony flourish.

In honour of this season, the Green Wolves hosted the Season of Creation Inter-House Competition, challenging Year 9 and Year 10 students to design an art installation from recycled materials. Each House selected two representatives who worked collaboratively to bring the theme to life in just 45 minutes during a lunchtime challenge at the Old Canteen Steps.

The creativity and innovation displayed were truly inspiring. Students used a diverse range of recycled materials—from bottle caps and cardboard to timber offcuts and fabrics—to create powerful installations that communicated messages of hope, peace, and ecological renewal. Some pieces echoed the symbolism of the Garden of Peace or the Olive Tree, while others explored imaginative ways of reimagining waste as beauty.

Once completed, the installations were proudly displayed in the JJ & Mary Room. The art installations will be judged by the wonderful Art Department and Fr Tom who will carefully assess each entry according to creativity, originality, alignment with the theme, effective use of recycled materials, and the ability to engage the community.

The competition showcased the best of our students’ talents and passion for sustainability. It not only raised awareness about caring for Creation but also encouraged teamwork, problem-solving, and the reimagining of waste as a valuable resource.

We congratulate all Houses for their enthusiastic participation as they captured the spirit of “Peace with Creation” and will be remembered as a symbol of this year’s Season of Creation.

The Inter-House Competition was a resounding success, reminding us that when justice is restored, peace naturally follows.

    Environmental Focus Groups

In Week 5 of Term 2, over 40 students, whose names were provided by Heads Of House, participated in an Environmental Focus Group. The aim was to gain insight into the student voice on how students perceive our school environment, challenges and future goals for our school.

    The questions included:

    1. What would inspire more students to care for and protect our school environment?

    2. What are the biggest challenges stopping students from getting involved in xaring for the environment at school?

    3. If we could achieve one environmental goal at school by the end of 2026, what should it be - and why is that a priority?

For quick reference, the feedback included:

    • Students wish for more regular reminders on being environmentally conscious
    • Students appreciate creative engagement through competitions
    • Students are challenged by laziness and poor habits
    • Students expect others to clean up after them
    • Students wish for more leadership in this space
    • Students value and wish for a cleaner school environment

Overall, it is clear that students do want to embrace a change in how the environment is perceived. By becoming more conscious of our actions this is possible.
