    Marathon for Redfern Jarjum College

    FR TOM RENSHAW SJ, RECTOR

Over the last twenty-four hours, the majority of our Year 12 students have participated in the Marathon for Redfern Jarjum College , the Jesuit primary school for First Nations students. The Class of 2025 are building upon the legacy of the Class of 2024, who pioneered this initiative last year.

I am delighted that our students this year have chosen to support another Jesuit ministry in Redfern Jarjum College. Last week, I mentioned that there are ten global identifiers of Jesuits schools, and the eighth identifier is being part of a global network at the service of mission. Our Class of 2025 are choosing to honour this identifier by running in solidarity for their fellow, albeit younger, Jesuit students at school in Redfern.

One of the highlights yesterday was the presence of students from Redfern Jarjum College, along with their principal, Ms Kath Zerounian and a number of other teachers from the school. They joined our students for the initial leg of the relay, after leading us in the Acknowledgement of Country. Following this I blessed our students, praying that they would have the courage, perseverance and resilience needed for this challenge.

This final engagement by our Year 12 students has been a powerful expression of their student motto for this year - Serve with Honour . In coming together and stretching themselves for the benefit of others, the Class of 2025 have indeed served with honour and distinction. It was inspirational to see the students running around the College at various points of the day and night as the final opportunity for them, as students, to give expression to their desire to be young men for and with others.

Our students set themselves a fundraising target of $20,000 which is the amount needed to support the education of one student at Redfern Jarjum College each year. Donations can be made HERE . Thank you to all those who have generously supported the efforts of the Class of 2025 and in so doing strengthened the presence of Jesuit education in Redfern. Thank you to our staff who ran with the students and those who co-ordinated all of the logistics that enabled this initiative to take place.

Finally, thank you all for your extraordinary support last week at the Jesuit Mission Bazaar. It is one of my favourite days of the year as the generosity of the Riverview Community and the wider Jesuit network within Sydney is so tangibly present.

Looking forward to the final week of the term and the Valete celebrations next week.

    The Generosity of Riverview

    MR MARK TANNOCK, PRINCIPAL

Riverview is such a generous community. As Fr Tom recounts in his article above, our Year 12s, staff and parents have been generously raising funds in their Marathon for Redfern Jarjum College. The same generosity was on display last Saturday at the Jesuit Mission Bazaar – a work of charity and justice that the College has been hosting for over a remarkable 70 years. After attending it as a visitor for a decade, it was a privilege to witness the commitment of our community from the inside in 2025.

In doing so, I would like to acknowledge and thank everyone who was involved on Saturday. The Bazaar is only made possible by the generous hearts of our students, staff, parents, Old Boys and community members in supporting a Jesuit ministry that is devoted to caring for the poor in developing nations around the world.

Thank you to the P&F for their extraordinary generosity in ensuring the day was such a success. The P&F are clearly the guardians of our parent culture, and they prioritise support of the College through a commitment to humility and ‘giving back’ to those in need. We will be recognising our generous parent volunteers in Term 4 of this year. Thanks in particular to P&F President Mrs Leesa Feilen, Vice President Mrs Claudia McInerney, and the rest of the P&F Executive.

Thank you to the Old Ignatians’ Union for their decades long support for the Bazaar. Dr Paul Brogan has served on the day for the last 48 years straight. A remarkable achievement. Whilst I failed in my decade-long quest to win a ham on the OIU Ham Wheel, we remain grateful for their generosity.

Our staff have been thanked internally by the College - including Heather Mitchell, Reece Duggan and Sally Gates, without whom the event could not have proceeded.

Finally, and most importantly, we thank our students across the College for their generosity on the day. Each Riverview boy put their best foot forward and created a fabulous sense of fun and community in support of those less fortunate around the world. Jesuit Mission CEO, Helen Forde, sent the following message to the Rector and I this week:

What a day! The 2025 Jesuit Mission Bazaar was alive with energy - the sun shone brightly, crowds poured in, and everywhere we turned there were open and generous hearts. Once again, the Saint Ignatius' College community - students, staff, parents and Old Ignatians - created a spirit-filled, joyful gathering that truly embodied being men and women for and with others.

We are deeply grateful for the hundreds of volunteers who brought the day to life. Their generosity of time and spirit was the Magis in action - quietly, joyfully serving, and creating an atmosphere where all could come together for a greater purpose.

Your hospitality and partnership allow Jesuit Mission to continue empowering communities living on the margins to free themselves from poverty and injustice. Together, we are making St Ignatius’ vision real - for the greater glory of God.

    -------------------

It’s been a big week for Drama at the College. The dramatic arts are an essential dimension of a Jesuit education as it provides opportunities for boys to cultivate their creative side and to develop the skills of public oratory, teamwork and reflection. This week, the Year 9 and 10 Co-Curricular Drama Production of Billy Budd was held in the O’Kelly Theatre over four nights with the final shows taking place tonight and tomorrow. It is superb and I was amazed by the overall quality of the production with the set design, stage management and acting all of a particularly high quality. Drama is alive and well at Riverview.

    P&F Update - Term 3 Week 9

MRS LEESA FEILEN, P&F PRESIDENT 2025

What a wonderful day we had at the 2025 Jesuit Mission Bazaar!

After a week of rain, Saturday brought perfect weather and high spirits, as generations came together to celebrate across the College grounds. From the youngest visitors to our beloved old boys, there was something for everyone to enjoy.

The ever-popular Ham Wheel drew laughter and excitement, with lucky winners taking home their Christmas hams. The various Houses of Saint Ignatius’ College Riverview ran fantastic raffles and stalls, while the Boarders brought a touch of the country to the city with fresh produce, flowers, and unique handcrafted goods—a stall that never disappoints.

Mr Tannock and SIC staff bravely faced the dunk tank, raising dollars and laughs alike. Fr Tom was on the BBQ from dawn to dusk, serving the famous Campion kebabs, while the scent of sizzling food, fairy floss, snow cones, and fruit salad filled the air.

The Regis lolly stall was a hit, books and wine found new homes, and the View Café offered a delicious spread of scones, cakes, and sandwiches. Live music from the talented band members of the College set the tone throughout the day, culminating in a spirited Battle of the Bands between Aloys' and Riverview.

The 2025 Bazaar was a true celebration of community. Thank you to all who gave so generously—your support, spirit, and presence made it a day to remember. The real joy came from seeing young and old come together, sharing laughter, connection, and purpose. How lucky we are to be part of such a community.

Talented artist and mother of Old Boys Ollie and Jack Seymour, Trish Crampton will produce a limited edition, numbered and signed prints. If you would like to enjoy a memory of 2025 this is your chance. Please register you interest via email HERE .

Some may be able to spare a few hours of an evening; some prefer being at school unpacking cold drinks. There is a role for everyone!

Please let us know by filling in the 2026 P&F Volunteers Interest form here or contact Leesa on 0409 411 039 or Claudia on 0402 816 854.

MS DEBRA WILLIAMS, HEAD OF INNOVATION AND RESEARCH

The fourth issue of Riverview’s literary journal, The Edge of Words , is now available. All submissions from staff and students relate to the theme, There Will Be Time .

This issue elicited thoughtful responses about writing, service, climate change, and cultural identity, with some even harnessing the theme’s origin, T.S. Eliot’s angst-ridden poem, “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock”. We congratulate all contributors who have shared their talent and gifts with our community.

The student board has decided on the next theme: Short Memory .

We welcome staff and student contributions in the form of poetry, fiction, or creative nonfiction, along with cover art. For more submission guidelines, please explore this page .

With gratitude to the hard-working student board members of this literary journal, and special thanks to Alex Mai, Riverview's ICT Web Services Officer, who facilitates all digital formatting.

    GPS 2nds Debating Champions!

    MR LIAM DONOHOE, SPC DEBATING

The Riverview 2nds debating team are the 2025 GPS 2nds Champions following an incredible undefeated season.

Charlie Spiteri, Michael Gordon, Louis Taylor, and Stephen Barchinski (Year 11) not only won the 2nds division for the first time since 2015, but also the rare honour of being GPS Champions, having beaten every team in the competition. They are the first Riverview team to go undefeated in any GPS age group since 2018, and the first in almost two decades in the Opens age group.

In the process, they won the coveted GPS Debating Cup, which has been pried away from Sydney Grammar for the first time since 2013—a truly incredible run brought to an end by a truly incredible team.

We are incredibly proud of their success and their dominant performances. More still, we are proud of the resilience they showed to bounce back after a tough ISDA season, and the way they actioned the expert coaching they received from Toby Mok and Toby Freeman (OR21). Throughout the season they represented the College admirably in and out of the classroom, maintaining respect and humility regardless of their success.

Thank you, in particular, to our Year 12 debaters, in and out of the 2nds. You and your families have made incredible contributions to the debating program, in some cases for 8 years. You have brought us more trophies, wins, and rep selections than any year group in living memory.

Congratulations again to this outstanding team on an outstanding performance. In one of the College’s great years of trophies, they have added a highly coveted Championship which has eluded us for a decade.

Marathon for Redfern Jarjum College Wrap-up

Over the past two days, our Year 12 students have shown extraordinary endurance and generosity as they completed the 42km Marathon for Redfern Jarjum College. Running through the night and finishing this afternoon, the boys embodied true Ignatian spirit—dedicating their time and energy to support the important work RJC does with First Nations children and their families.

Thanks to their efforts, and the generosity of our community, more than $19,000 has already been raised toward the $20,000 goal —an incredible achievement.

A heartfelt thank you goes to the staff who coordinated and supervised the event, ensuring everything ran smoothly and safely. We are also deeply grateful to the parent volunteers who kept the barbecue sizzling, handed out water, and cheered the runners on every step of the way.

This remarkable community effort reflects the best of Riverview: service, teamwork and a commitment to justice. Donations can still be made HERE to help reach the $20,000 target. Don't miss Billy Budd!

    JIMMY DE FLAMINGH (YEAR 10)

This week, the intermediate (Year 9/10) play, Billy Budd , based on the novella by renowned author Herman Melville, opened in the O’Kelly Theatre on Wednesday night. It has been an absolute blast to perform over the last week and to be received by such excited and supportive audiences.

The play follows a benevolent and naïve sailor, Billy, who, upon arriving on a naval ship in the French Wars, is confronted by his antithesis - the malicious Master-at-Arms, Claggart. A series of misadventures surrounding the two characters’ conflict forces Captain Vere into the distressing decision over Billy’s fate.

Being a part of this experience over the last term has been nothing short of incredible. On behalf of the cast, I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to all the staff who have made this show what it is: our directors Mr Hume and Mr Walker as well as Mrs Pocknall, Mrs Hunt, Mr Anderson, Mr Page and Ms Stern. We are highly appreciative of all your hard work and dedication that has provided us with such an enjoyable experience.

There are still two more shows this week: tonight (Friday), and Saturday night, both commencing at 6:00pm. We highly recommend you come and watch the show, where you’ll be exposed to an exhilarating story of love, hatred, hope and despair.
