    A new beginning

    FR TOM RENSHAW SJ, RECTOR

This weekend we begin a new liturgical year, as we, once again, enter into a time of preparation with the Season of Advent. It is a time when we long for the coming of the Lord and we do that in two ways: by looking backward to his first coming as the Christ child born in Bethlehem to Mary and by looking forward to his second coming as the Son of Man at the end of time. In the saving events of Christ’s death and resurrection we have indeed been reconciled to God and in this renewed relationship we already enjoy the essentials of salvation. But we know from the world we live in that the fullness of God’s kingdom is still a work in progress. So as Christians we prepare, wait and pray for the fullness of God’s kingdom to come.

Paradoxically, as we begin a new liturgical year we are coming to the end of the school year. With the warm weather of this past week, summer is certainly upon us. Many of us are turning our minds to the various tasks or jobs we would like to finish before the end of the year, and we await the time of rest and renewal we will experience over the Christmas and New Year period. During this time of celebrating with family and friends, enjoying the warm weather and the slower pace of life, we will have time to ponder our hopes for a new year.

As I reflect upon this year, one of the many things that I am grateful for has been the gift of the Jubilee Year and the theme that Pope Francis gave us – pilgrims of hope. Throughout the year, I have been drawn to reflect more deeply upon the important theological virtue of hope. In announcing the theme, Pope Francis said the following,

Everyone knows what it is to hope. In the heart of each person, hope dwells as the desire and expectation of good things to come, despite our not knowing what the future may bring.

This same sense of hope runs throughout the season of Advent. Over the next 4 weeks we are invited to take time in our lives to prepare ourselves to celebrate the birth of Jesus, the Christ, our Saviour. Over these 4 weeks our first readings at mass point us to the positive, the promise of goodness and hopefulness. In contrast the choice of our second readings and the gospels present a challenge to each of us; the readings are designed to “wake us up” and lead us to a deeper relationship with Jesus, reminding us that we do not know when the Son of God will come.

During the season of Advent we are invited to reflect upon what are our deepest desires – the life giving desires that have been planted within us by God through the action of the Spirit – the invitation to respond with love to our Creator and each other and when we do this we can indeed go rejoicing to God’s house  knowing that peace and goodness will flourish. And when we respond in this way, we have nothing to fear about when the Son of God will return as through the deepening of our relationship with God and each other, we will be ready.

The 1700th Anniversary of the Council of Nicea

Last week I wrote about Pope Leo’s trip to Turkey and Lebanon taking place over these days. Pope Leo will visit Ankara, Istanbul and Iznik (which was once known as Nicea). Last Sunday Pope Leo issued an Apostolic Letter “ In unitate fidei ”, commemorating the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicea. In this letter Pope Leo encourages the whole church to renew her enthusiasm for the profession of faith. Pope Leo begins the letter by saying,

In the unity of faith, proclaimed since the beginning of the Church, Christians have been called to walk in harmony, guarding and transmitting the gift they have received with love and joy. This is expressed in the words of the Creed, “I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God… for our salvation he came down from heaven,” that were formulated 1700 years ago by the Council of Nicaea, the first ecumenical gathering in the history of Christianity.

May our hearts be filled with great hope so that we can more readily receive the grace and gift of Jesus anew this Advent so we can be ready to once celebrate Christmas, the birth of Jesus, of God coming among us, with great joy.

    Wishing you all every blessing.

The Opening and Blessing of Wingaru

    MR MARK TANNOCK, PRINCIPAL

Last Friday evening the College opened and blessed the marvellous new Wingaru Building . The building was blessed by Father Provincial, Quyen Vu SJ and opened by the Hon. Senator Malarndirri McCarthy, Minister for Indigenous Australians and former parent and member of staff at our Jesuit school. Senator McCarthy could not attend in person because of Cyclone Fina that was close to Darwin at the time, so she opened the building virtually with a recorded video.

The College was pleased to welcome special guests including Ms Jacinta Collins, the Executive Director of the National Catholic Education Commission; Mrs Beth McConnell, Chair of Jesuit Education Australasia; Mr Dallas McInerney, CEO of Catholic Schools New South Wales;  Ms Danielle Cronin, the Executive Director of Sydney Catholic Schools; Chair of the College Board, Mr Greg Mackay, along with the Board Directors; the former Principal of the College, Dr Paul Hine, along with Dr Ann Hine; and First Nations Elder, Uncle Les McLeod.

The event was the culmination of years of work by many at the College and we are so grateful for the generous commitment of those who have contributed to the realisation of Wingaru. We are especially grateful to our generous donors who supported this project through their benefaction. Riverview is fortunate to have a very generous community that supports its mission with both time and with financial gifts.

The name Wingaru was chosen well before the foundation of this building was laid; back when the area it is now located it was still a basketball court. It was respectfully selected, in consultation with the Cammeraigal Elders and the College’s First Nations students. Wingaru means ’to think’.

Wingaru is not simply an encouraging verb. It’s a statement about the kind of learning that will take place within its walls and across the campus. This space is designed to nurture excellence across Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and PDHPE, while also encouraging reflection, discernment, and a commitment to serving others—hallmarks of a Riverview education.

Along with our First Nations Program it stands as a built symbol of our Jesuit school’s commitment to authentic reconciliation in our nation. It is appropriate that Saint Ignatius’ College Riverview – a school that sits so prominently in the folk memory of the Australian Catholic Church and the Australian people – should hold such a commitment. We do so not from a sense of shame nor of guilt – these are the bad spirits. We hold this commitment from a genuine sense of hope for a just future for all our children.

WELCOMING MR ANDERSON, NEW DIRECTOR OF CO-CURRICULUM

Today, the College announced that Mr Cameron Anderson will be joining Riverview as our new Director of Co-curriculum in Term 1, 2026.

Cameron is currently Head of Sport at Barker College, where he has served for the last six years. During his term of service, he introduced the Barker Athlete Support and Enrichment (BASE) program to nurture student athletes. Cameron also pioneered a character development framework grounded in Lerner’s Positive Youth Development model, ensuring measurable growth in students’ values and character. He also was responsible for ensuring sport became fully co-educational at the College and the introduction of a dance program.

Prior to Barker, Cameron served for 15 years at Pymble Ladies’ College including as Director of Co-curricular. He was responsible for all co-curricular programs including drama, music, debating, sport, public speaking, dance and others. During this time, Cameron led the creation of the Centenary Precinct - delivering outstanding facilities including a 50m pool, a learn-to-swim centre and a synthetic sports field.

Cameron’s passion for fostering holistic growth through co-curricular programs is evident in his achievements and was also evident through his application process. He was the unanimous choice of the selection panel. Cameron is excited to be joining our Jesuit school, and he understands and supports our culture and our deep commitment to a holistic education for every boy. He also understands our desire to hold in tension the need for both participation and excellence in our Co-Curricular Program.

We look forward to welcoming him next year.

Message from Alex Kerr, Claver House Captain

As we move into the final stretch of the year, the College has displayed nothing short of outstanding energy, commitment, and community spirit across every aspect of school life.

Last Saturday, the Viewboys travelled all across Sydney to compete in the penultimate GPS round for the year. The 1st V took on the rivals from across the river, Joeys, resulting in an astounding 104-51 victory, with Bailey Hanson, who was recently announced in the NSW U20 Basketball Team, shooting 9 out of 11 threes in the first half alone. Congratulations again to the Basketball program on another successful week, placing Riverview’s undefeated 1sts at the top of the table. Over to Campbelltown, which saw the Athletics boys dominate the track, with special mention to Lachlan Maiers, Charlie Culbert and Tom Poynton, who led the charge and delivered some outstanding times, and Harry Fingleton for showing true grit and determination in the 800m. There were many other victories across the weekend, such as cricket, tennis and the rowers out at the Scots Regatta in Penrith.

The weekend also saw the Year 12 City vs Country boarders cricket match. It was quite the display of Riverview’s talent with the Country side proving too dominant against the city side. Country chased down the City’s 121 (all out). Jack Haire showed some impressive batting as well as Henry Buscall, who scored 2 runs off 7 balls and Raff Toohey taking a couple of wickets.

With the Year 9 Challenge nearing completion, it's been great hearing the many stories and experiences from the boys. The wide variety of activities has broadened each boy's skillset as they move into the senior years at the College. It also provided a great opportunity for many new friendships to be cemented.

Today, both the senior and junior schools gathered in Ramsay Hall to celebrate an Advent Liturgy which calls us to reflect upon the themes of hope, preparation, and almsgiving as we enter the sacred season. The liturgy brought our community together in prayer, song, and reflection, offering students a moment to consider how they might bring compassion, generosity, and peace into their daily lives.

At lunchtime, we saw the spectacle of Inter-House musical chairs, bringing together the boys for the last House competition of the year. The Canteen steps erupted with cheers as representatives from Years 7-12 in each House circled, ducked, and dived for the last remaining seats, showcasing not only quick reflexes but true House spirit.

It's been an eventful week approaching the holidays, and I wish everyone luck this weekend for the last game of the year. I encourage everyone to get around their mates and support each other both on and off the fields.

Fab Five – Round 6 vs. Joeys

    MR TOM GARLEPP, BASKETBALL SPC

Rivalry weekend always brings extra energy — and this round against Joeys was no exception. From buzzer beaters to defensive masterclasses, Riverview basketball once again showed its trademark fight and flair. Here are the top five highlights from the round:

    1) 6th V – Down to the Wire (26–25 Win)

In one of the most dramatic finishes of the season, the 6ths pulled off a one-point thriller. For most of the game, Riverview trailed but never lost belief. Henry “The Hammer” dominated the paint, denying Joeys any easy looks, while Max “Magic” Lenehan attacked fearlessly despite giving up size. Down two with seconds left, Max coolly drained a clutch free throw, and with just 15 seconds remaining, Dominic “Dagger” Smith hit a silky mid-range jumper to seal the victory. A hard-fought, heart-filled win for the ages for one of the school’s most “interesting” teams.

    2) 9th V – Antony Nobilo’s MVP Show (30–24 Win)

The 9ths remain undefeated after another strong all-round team display, capped by an outrageous stat line from Antony “Edwards” Nobilo — 27 points of pure dominance. Jack “Swiss Army Knife” Hickinbotham might not have troubled the scorers, but his impact was monumental: 8 steals, 7 blocks, 13 rebounds, and 9 assists. This squad continues to be a model of balance, chemistry, and defensive discipline.

    3) 16B – Back on Track (35–19 Win)

After a disappointing loss last week, the 16Bs bounced back in style with a 35–19 win. Every player contributed, with defensive intensity and teamwork leading the way. This performance was a statement — a reminder that this deep, talented squad remains one of the benchmarks of the competition.

    4) 15F – Adapting Under Pressure (34–21 Win vs. Trinity)

With Joeys unable to field a team, the 15Fs faced a tough Trinity side in an unexpected matchup — and rose to the challenge. A strong first half saw Riverview take control, but foul trouble and a fast Trinity run made things tense early in the second. A timely timeout and regrouping talk from Coach Max Joosse settled the group, who responded with poise and intensity to close the game out. A 34–21 win that showcased resilience, leadership, and maturity.

    5) 15B – Business as Usual (48–16 Win)

A dominant display from the 15Bs, who continue to impress week after week. Bede “The Bulldozer” Mercer powered through defenders for easy scores, while Xavier “Silky” Johnson’s poise and control at both ends helped the team cruise to victory. This squad is building something special — efficient, confident, and connected basketball.

A memorable rivalry round filled with grit, composure, and big-time moments. Riverview continues to set the tone across the GPS — Go View!

    Scots College Regatta

MR JIM BUSTEED, ASSISTANT ROWING SPC

Last weekend the GPS Squad and the Year 10 Eights travelled to Penrith for the Scots College Regatta, with all crews competing in two races.  The high standards of the previous regatta were again evident in tight competition with Shore. The 10.4 crew won both their races, the 10.1 won one race and were a close second in the other and the 10.2 and 10.3 crews were second in their races.

The 1st Fours won both their races as did the 3rd and 4th Fours and the 3rd Eight, with the 4th Eight finishing fourth in the same event. The 1st and 2nd Eights were third in their first race and second in the second. Both crews improved their performances in their second race, with the 2nd VIII closing the margin to Shore to 0.56 seconds in the closest finish of the day.

On Saturday night the Riverview Rowing community gathered at the Boathouse to celebrate the commencement of another rowing season. A large number of parents and coaches were in attendance for a very successful evening. A special thanks to Mrs Belinda Carr for assisting in the organising of this event.

This Friday the selection trials for the combined GPS VIII are being held on Friday and the Year 8 and 9 Quads and the Year 10 VIIIs are competing at the Sydney High Regatta at Hen and Chicken Bay. This is the first regatta of the season for the Quads following informal races against St Josephs last Saturday where all crews performed well.

    The Golf Report

    MR LOUIS CALLANAN, GOLF SPC

In the battle of the Jesuits, it was only right that the spoils were shared, with the First IV drawing their match against St Aloysius (2-2) at North Ryde GC. Without the breaks in luck early on, Charlie Brown struggled to find his footing against a strong and steady competitor. Ted Madigan fought on hard throughout his match, but failed to fire late, losing narrowly in the closing holes.

Fortunately for these boys, their teammates dug deep to even up the scoreboard. Hugo Davidson, in his fourth outing for the College, was strong again; an early birdie got things underway, and before long he was home and hosed — a 75 percent strike rate isn’t too bad. In the fourth match, however, it was down to the wire. Debutant Mitch Hornby went into the par 3 18th hole all square, and had to show steely resolve to secure victory for himself and much needed points for his team — a great effort in his first Interschool match. Going into the Christmas break, the boys are sitting 10/14 on the ladder. Climbing it next term might take a power of work, but with skills honed and spirits high the team will be ready to give it their all.

Tomorrow, the whole squad takes to Lane Cove GC to play the first nine holes of the School Champs. Good luck to all, and have a restful and enjoyable break.

    Boarding Annual Fishing Competition

MR ALEXANDER GODBOLD, BOARDING RECREATION OFFICER

At the beginning of this term I received a phone call, out of the blue from Jeremy Wade of River Monsters (stream now on 7+), how he got my number I still don’t know, and I was too awestruck to ask. Why would such a high-profile angler be calling me?

The last fish I caught would have been a 7cm toadfish with a Kmart rod and reel. Well, it wasn’t to invite me to start a new career direction, he had heard the Riverview Annual Fishing Competition was around the corner and he wanted in.

Exciting! I thought how good to expose our boys to such an experienced and skilled professional. Then came the paperwork and then a NDS and then reviewing scripts, it all became too much… so the Competition would remain as intended, for our boarding students and our boarding students only.

Not even a week later I received another call from a phone number I didn’t recognise. I answered (because I’m brave like that), it was Rex Hunt. Now this was not as big of a surprise as Jeremy Wade since my twin brother (Riverview boarder ’07) recently purchased Rex’s old fishing boat, my twin probably mentioned the upcoming competition during the exchange.

Well, no surprise, Rex wanted in and I would have loved to have him, but I couldn’t play favourites and I had no doubt if I let Rex in having kicked Jeremy out, I was sure to be hearing from Jeremy’s people.

The Annual Fishing Competition would remain for our Boarders and any monsters lurking in the Lane Cove River would be for our boys to catch.

The usual species caught include flatheads, brim, and an occasional perch or mullet. Not uncommon to get decent size fish and most of the boys’ rigs are set accordingly.

Because of this, it makes what Lachlan and Henry Garcia-Hennessy achieved even more remarkable.

If you don’t know your fish, a prized catch by many anglers if a Jewfish (Mulloway). They are notoriously difficult to target and often referred to as the silver ghost.

To target a Jewie you’d use live bait, how the boys got it with a frozen pilchard astounds me and you definitely wouldn’t be on a 10lb line (recommend a 50lb leader). When hooked Jewfish are known to put up a fight, characterised by hard head shakes and strong, fast runs towards structures to target a snare.

With the odds of such a monster being in the river, and for it to target the boys’ line, then for the line and hook to hold, credit to the Garcia-Hennessy boys and their 20min fight to land the thing.

    • 1st Place: Best of the Rest: Lachlan and Henry Garcia-Hennessy (Division 10 & 9)
    • 1st Place: Largest Flathead (45cm): John Messara (Junior Division)
    • 2nd Place: Largest Flathead (43cm): James Stanley (Junior Division)

    1st Place

    2nd Place

    3rd Place

All in all, it was a successful day as we round out the year with our final few recreation activities and movie night.

All fish caught were released back into the river.

Celebrating a Year of Growth, Connection and New Beginnings

MR TIM SEDGWICK, ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF BOARDING

As the year draws to a close, we pause to reflect on what has been a remarkable season of learning, change and joy within the Junior Division. From the first morning gathering in Term 1 to our final weeks together now, our students have grown not only academically, but in confidence, character and care for one another.

We are proud of every student, those who have excelled, those who have persisted through challenge, and those who have found new strengths along the way. The growth we have seen is not only measured in academic results, but in the way boys greet one another with respect, welcome new peers, show kindness, and give their best even when the task is difficult.

This year also marks an important milestone as we celebrated Mr Tannock’s arrival into the boarding community. Mr Tannock encouraged the boys to strive for success, reflect on their opportunities, and take pride in their achievements. His commitment to culture, communication and genuine connection has helped shape a positive tone across the boarding community. This week he celebrated the year with the Junior Division with Brownies and Ice Cream.

The Junior Division is thriving, and we are immensely pound of the young men of character they are becoming. We wish all students and families a restful holiday and a joyful return in the new year.

Year 12 Drama Australian Drama Performance

    LACHLAN CLUBB, DRAMA CAPTAIN 2026

This week, the  2026 Year 12 Drama cohort was challenged with reinterpreting two 1960s and 1970s Australia plays - Alex Buzo’s Norm and Ahmed and David Williamson’s The Removalists - to form a cohesive performance that highlighted key themes and social commentary from both pieces. Building off their realist elements and the genre of New Wave Australian Theatre, the boys had 12 minutes to combine scenes and characters from the two plays, shaping a strong understanding of the HSC drama syllabus. We were gifted with an audience of Year 8 and 12 students, who were crucial in extending the social commentary of the piece, and we are very grateful for their presence. Later next year, the boys will have to write about the plays in their HSC examinations, so this was an excellent opportunity to get an in-depth study of the form, characters and themes.

Riverview’s Private Drama and Public Speaking Tuition (formerly Speech and Drama)

MR PETER WATTERS, HEAD OF FACULTY - MUSIC

Although the term “Speech and Drama” may feel a little dated today, our program remains as relevant as ever. While we no longer teach traditional elocution, our Private Drama and Public Speaking tutors help students develop engaging and effective vocal skills including clarity, projection, confidence, and expressive dynamics, creating poised and compelling speakers and performers.

All tutors are drama school trained with extensive performance and teaching experience, enabling us to tailor lessons to your son’s individual needs and goals. We view speech differences not as impediments but as features that can lend authenticity and uniqueness to a voice. Drama training, character work, improvisation, and even singing often assist in easing challenges such as stutters or tics.

Common public-speaking concerns such as nerves, stage fright, pacing issues, low volume, or monotone delivery can be improved with targeted, practical exercises that help students become lively and expressive communicators.

We thoroughly enjoy working with students as they build confidence and embrace their unique voices. Alongside drama games, improvisation, text work, and presentation skills, we also assist students in preparing for curricular oral assessments, focusing on clarity, structure, and engaging delivery. We also support students preparing audition pieces for both school and external productions.

In the senior years, private drama can be especially valuable for those studying curricular drama, offering focused support with monologues, theory, and performance technique.

While there is no expectation to sit Trinity College London exams, many students find that preparing for Acting, Speech and Drama, Communication Skills, or Musical Theatre assessments builds confidence and enriches both their curricular work and passion for the performing arts.

“I know it’s down to all my years of speech and drama training that I’ve had the confidence to front up and deliver my speeches with confidence in front of the school.”
    — Sam Wright, College Captain, OR2024

“It’s been such a joy to watch the private drama boys’ growth and progress over the years of training. I highly recommend it to anyone, from those just wanting to gain confidence to those who are interested in drama as an artistic pursuit.”
    — Justine Clarke, Riverview parent, actor, singer, and national treasure

Seeking Night Settlers for the Ignatian Children’s Holiday Camp

MRS CHRISTINE ZIMBULIS, HEAD OF COMMUNITY RELATIONS

Thank you to all our wonderful parents who have volunteered for the Ignatian Children’s Holiday Camp. Your support is greatly appreciated.

We are still looking for a few more volunteers as Night Settlers on Friday 5th and Saturday 6th December from 8pm - 10pm.

All the children coming to camp are regularly cared for by family at home, and the camp provides a time of fun and connection for them, while giving their carers a short break. The children stay in Kevin Fagan House under the care and supervision of allocated students, medical staff, teaching staff and ex companion support.

This camp relies on the generosity of many volunteers, and we’d love to invite Old Ignatians, past and present parents, to join the ICHC family by signing up.

    Night Settlers
This role makes it possible for the children to settle comfortably to bed when they are staying away from home (in some cases for the first time). We need about 8-10 helpers Thursday, Friday and Saturday night from 8.00pm – 10.00pm.

All volunteers must have a current Working with Children Number. If you are interested in volunteering, please visit ichc.riverview.nsw.edu.au/volunteers/parents (Parent Volunteer) or contact Christine Zimbulis at cszimbulis@riverview.nsw.edu.au .
