The Global Network of Jesuit Schools

    FR TOM RENSHAW SJ

Earlier this week, I was in Auckland at a meeting of Principals and Rectors of the Jesuit and Companion schools in Australia and New Zealand (pictured). The meeting was hosted by Saint Ignatius of Loyola Catholic College in Auckland. This school opened last year and is the newest member of our network of 11 schools, comprising of five Jesuit owned and governed schools and six Jesuit Companion schools: Xavier Catholic College, Hervey Bay, Xavier Catholic College in Ballina, Saint Ignatius College in Geelong, Loyola College in Watsonia, Melbourne, John XXIII College in Perth and the new school in Auckland.

Our network of 11 schools is part of a larger network of Jesuit schools across the globe, including 870 Jesuit schools across the world educating over 870,000 students. In addition to this there are another 1600 Fe Y Alegria schools educating over 630,000 students in 22 countries. Jesuit Refugee Service also runs a further 55 schools educating approximately 130,000 students in 20 countries.

Fr José Mesa SJ, the Secretary for Jesuit Education globally, joined our meeting in Auckland and has been visiting our College today. Fr Mesa met with senior and middle leaders of the College to learn about how we live our Jesuit charism, help form our students and staff in Ignatian spirituality and pedagogy, and bring to life the Jesuit vision for education. He also met with student leaders at lunchtime and observed a number of our classes in action.

At our meeting on Sunday, Fr Mesa invited us to reflect on the fact that we are part of the living tradition of Jesuit education. This living tradition has inspired students, teachers and families for over 475 years, flowing from the establishment of the first Jesuit school in Messina in 1548. In breaking open the living tradition, Fr Mesa reminded us that since the earliest days of the Society, our vision is one where we see the world as being our home . Moreover, innovation and adaptation are at the heart of our tradition, as we seek to respond to different places and contexts, while encountering different ecclesial and societal challenges.

We are fortunate to belong to a global network of schools that form part of the educational mission of the Society of Jesus. Since the beginning of Jesuit education, there has been a focus on forming both the mind and the heart of the student. Our hearts are formed when we are moved by what we see and experience. We seek to form within our students a desire to be a person for and with others, presenting Jesus Christ as the best expression of this.

From 2011-2018, Fr Mesa and other Jesuit educational leaders spent nearly 10 years reflecting upon the question of how they could help school communities understand and respond better to their present context, drawing upon the fruit of the long conversation the first Jesuits began in the late 1540s when they opened their first school. The fruit of this discernment are expressed in a document titled, Jesuit Schools: A Living Tradition in the 21st Century – An Ongoing Exercise of Discernment .  This document outlines 10 global identifiers – or 10 key characteristics – for Jesuit schools across the world. In launching the document, Fr Sosa SJ, the current Superior General wrote the following:

“The document follows this tradition of assisting our educational apostolate in reflecting and discerning the particular challenges and opportunities of our time. It continues the necessary process of renewal, innovation and re-imagination that our education requires during this change of epoch that we experience today. The best tribute that we can offer to our long tradition in education is to explore new models, creative and imaginative ways to offer our spiritual vision and educational experience.”

Here at Riverview, The Living Tradition is one of our foundational documents that helps guide and inform the way we seek to respond to and live out the Jesuit mission of education that has been entrusted to us.

    Wishing you all every blessing.

    Holistic Education

    MR MARK TANNOCK

As one enters the Gartlan Sports Centre there is a famous quote from Saint Irenaeus, the great 2nd century theologian: “the Glory of God is the (human person) fully alive”. The holistic education offered at Saint Ignatius’ College Riverview is a testament to this belief. We want every student to identify his gifts and to pursue them with excellence. Such a pursuit is consistent with our belief that these gifts exist to be shared. It is a pleasure to witness these gifts being shared in a wide variety of pursuits by our students.

On Wednesday night, the first production of the Year 12 Play, VaudeView , was staged in the O’Kelly Theatre. Since their establishment, Jesuits schools have placed an emphasis on the performing arts and the spoken word, so it was thrilling to witness this emphasis continue in our Drama and Co-Curricular Programs.

VaudeView was an eclectic collection of musical numbers, monologues and comedic skits that ranged from the dramatic to the riotously funny. Angus Martinez and Dominic Flynn reimagined the curmudgeons from The Muppet Show (and even had some fun at their new Principal’s expense in doing so) and Archie Delany played the role of host with more costume changes than Dame Edna Everidge. Tristan Donnelly and Adam Walters also offered constant humour with their ‘dad jokes’ and the highlight was Adam receiving a standing ovation following his musical number.

Last Saturday I was privileged to watch our 1st V play against Newington College away. I am advised that Newington is a powerhouse in AAGPS Basketball and the multitude of banners surrounding their court heralding their triumphs were next to banners listing their Christian virtues. Our 1st V played a superb team game and justifiably won the contest – the first time we have done so for several years. The victory was all the more meritorious given the absence of Captain Bol Ding. Riverview was led by the impressive Bailey Hanson who was excellent on both ends of the court. Congratulations to coach Thomas Garlepp and the team of students who represented us so well on the day:

I have also been attending as many of the House Masses as I can and on Tuesday night Smith House came together to celebrate the Eucharist and honour the graduating Year 12s and their families. College Chaplain, Fr Joe Dooley SJ, presided. Like the other House Masses it was a special occasion to see all of the families coming together in Dalton Chapel.

The night was introduced by Assistant Head of Smith House and Religious Education Teacher, Mr Martin Collins. Mr Collins is retiring at the end of this year, and his wife and sons came to see him presented with a special candle by Smith House.

The Smith House mass & supper, with Mr Collins in the centre

In commencing proceedings, Mr Collins shared the following reflection, which is a testament his commitment to the vocation of teaching:

When I first commenced my career things were very different to today. There were no computers, no mobile phones, no photo copiers, no smart boards, no permission notes, no white board markers and no risk assessments.

Many things have changed, but much remains the same.

Here are some things I have discovered after 45 years of being a ‘chalkie’.

    1. All students like Dad jokes, even though they pretend not to.
    2. Very few students read emails.
    3. 70s music still holds up against contemporary music.
    4. Keeping socks up is scientifically impossible.
    5. Missing food day Thursday is cause for a code red.
    6. Students like to learn and some even like homework.
    7. Boys’ brains develop very slowly.
    8. Students learn best when they are happy and respected.
    9. All students are good but some of their behaviours are not. And finally,
    10. The secret to success is to always try to be kind.

    P&F Update - Week 5

MRS LEESA FEILEN, P&F PRESIDENT 2025

Congratulations to everyone on making your way to Week 5 of our school term. What a busy start to the year! Readjusting to early mornings, new routines, scheduling sport training and games throughout the week and co-curricular rehearsals on the weekend and fitting in quality family time. The long, lazy days of January are a distant memory.

Thank you to everyone in our SIC community for the positive warm start to our school year, for joining us in numbers at the Welcome Mass, extraordinary numbers at the Welcome Social Evening, for cheering on our rowing community and being the friendly faces of Riverview to those visiting the college for the Gold Cup Regatta. Student Leadership

Message from Matteo Milozzo, Fernando House Captain

It’s been a massive week for sport at Riverview, with some unreal performances and big moments across the board!

First off, a huge shout out to the 1st V Basketball team for making recent history over the weekend, taking down Newington for the first time in years. The boys played great, showing serious grit and determination to get the win. It’s been a long time coming, and their effort is a testament to the hard work they’ve put in all season. Massive congratulations to the team!

Over on the water, our rowers are keeping up the dominance, going 2/2 once again down at Penrith as they build towards the Head of the River. Their consistency has been next level, and with the biggest race of the year just around the corner, it’s exciting to see them in such strong form.

In the pool, the 1st Water Polo team pulled off a big 9-6 win over Shore, securing their spot in the semi-finals this weekend against Knox. They’ve been putting in the work all season, and now they’ve got a huge opportunity ahead of them. With a grand final spot on the line, they’ll need all the support they can get, so if you get the chance, make sure to get around them and show your support!

Outside of sport, there’s plenty happening around the school as well. Today in Period 2, the senior leaders organised an awesome lineup of activities for everyone to get involved in. Whether it was hitting the courts for basketball, lacing up for some soccer or touch footy, or even getting competitive in a food auction, there was something for everyone. It was a great chance to take a break and the turnout was fantastic despite the hot weather, especially in Fernando where we played touch and soccer. Some houses were even lucky enough to walk away with a soft drink and a snag!

Also, a massive good luck to the Year 12s who are putting on the Senior Play tonight, they already had some performances which were amazing! Months of hard work have gone into bringing this production to life, and it’s set to be an absolute cracker.

Good luck to everyone competing this weekend and have a great weekend!

    Go View!

    Character Builders at Regis

MR ANDREW SAYYAD, YEAR 6.3 HOMEROOM TEACHER

Character Builders yet again, proved to be a memorable day for the Year 6 cohort. They welcomed adversity through the activities and flourished in their perseverance through teamwork, collaboration and patience. ‘Big-Ups’ to Damo and Niamh for imparting their knowledge and wisdom to our boys, exploring the concept of leading from the middle rather than always at the front. Challenging hands-on activities, intertwined with introspection and discussions; the perfect balance for the boys to grow from this experience.

On the 25th of February, our year six classes were very lucky to have an incursion with Character Builders. We were split into two groups to do some activities to help us become better leaders. My group went down to the drama room for the first activity where we would copy Damo who was one of the Character-Building staff. After that we had a huge challenge ahead of us, our group would have to make a huge domino line which the group before us failed to do so, it was incredibly hard and our group also failed. All around it was a wonderful day and I'm so grateful for the opportunities here at this school.

    By Benjamin Cronan

Character builders was amazing, we got to learn how to be inspiring leaders and we did so many fun activities such as boot camp and a massive domino train. After recess ‘The Great Race” had us all involved to improve our teamwork and leadership. I think one of the hardest games was the cup challenge because you needed patience and teamwork. Soon after we did Big-Ups, which is a nice way to tell someone why you appreciate them.

    By George Gracey

Character Builders was a fun and engaging leadership incursion. One of the challenges was that we had to stack 1500 dominoes without them collapsing, even though we failed a few times we persisted and it made lots of people laugh. This was my favourite part because we all got to know each other a lot better and it was a very engaging activity. At the end, we all did ‘Big-Ups’ which I also liked because it makes you feel really good when you get a compliment and it makes your day! This was definitely my favourite incursion ever and I felt sensational after it!

The Golf Report | Round 10

MR MARTY COLLINS, GOLF SPORTS PROGRAM COORDINATOR

The fixture took place at Shore’s home club, Northbridge Golf Club. Joshua and Ronan, our number 1 and 2 players had to play their best to remain competitive. Joshua, giving 4 shots to his opponent held his nerve throughout the match. Two sand saves on the back nine, and an amazing birdie on 17 to match the birdie of his opponent meant he was 1 down playing the 18th hole. Despite his great drive, his opponent was in the box seat beside the green for 2. The pressure of making a good chip with a large crowd watching resulted in a slight mistake and an opportunity for Joshua to use his magic putter to square the match. Joshua’s ability to dig deep under pressure saw him once again come through for his team.

Ronan at one stage was 5 down and things looked pretty grim. One thing I have learned about our captain is that he never lies down. Four birdies in succession had him 1 down with 3 holes to play. What a fightback. Unfortunately, his opponent parred 15 and birdied 17 to win the match 3/1.

Ted our number 3 was in control from the outset. He was 3 up after 9 and continued to pressure his opponent into mistakes. The Shore coach was very complimentary about his play and after 15 holes he had shaken hands and collected the 3 points. Ted is in Year 10 and has been part of the program since year 7. He will have many more wins in his time here at the College.

James had the difficult task of giving 7 shots to his opponent. On a course with several par 3 holes, this can be very difficult. He got off to a great start and after 10 holes was 5 up. His opponent found his swing and reeled off 4 straight wins to be only 1 behind with 3 holes to play. A birdie on 17 by his challenger made the match all square with 1 hole to play. James, always very cool under pressure, managed a 7 on the final hole to beat his opponent by a shot and win the contest 1 up.

The 2.5 v 1.5 victory could easily have been a 1-3 loss except for the tenacity of the players involved.

In the final week of normal competition before the playoffs, we play our brothers from St. Aloysius. St. Aloysius, the competition leader, are hoping to get an easy victory and hence hold the trophy when it is presented in 2 weeks. We aim to make it as difficult as possible for them on our home track of Royal Lane Cove on Saturday. May the best team win.

    Scots and Kings/PLC Regattas

MR JIM BUSTEED, ASSISTANT ROWING PROGRAM COORDINATOR

Last Saturday the Junior Squads competed at the Scots College Regatta at Hen and Chicken Day while the GPS and Year 10 crews were at the Sydney International Regatta Centre for the Kings/PLC Regatta. It proved to be a very successful day with all crews performing well.

At the Scots Regatta fourteen crews raced with twelve winning their division and the other two finishing second. The winning crews were the 8.1, 8.2, 8.3, 8.4, 8.5, 8.6 Quads and the 9.1, 9.2, 9.3, 9.4, 9.5 and 9.6 Quads.

At Penrith ten crews raced winning six events and finishing second in three. The 1st VIII won their race by 10.29 seconds from Sydney Grammar and the 2nd VIII raced well to finish second to Shore. They then both raced in the Under 19 VIII where the 1st VIII and 2nd VIII both won their divisions.

The 1st and 2nd IVs and the 3rd VIII won their events, and the 3rd and 4th IV were second. These crews also raced in Under 19 Events with the 1st IV finishing a close second to a Scots crew made up of members of their 1st VIII, the 2nd and 3rd crew winning their divisions and the 5th IV finishing third behind the 3rd IV. The 3rd VIII raced in Division 2 of the Under 19 Eight and finished a creditable fourth.

The Year 10 Eights continued their good form with the 10.1 and 10.2 crews winning their events and the 10.3 and 10.4 crews finishing second.

This weekend the Junior crews return to Hen and Chicken Bay for the Newington College Regatta while the GPS and Year 10 crews will compete at the Sydney Rowing Club Regatta. Race times, results and live streaming for this regatta can be found at HERE.

CIS Football Cup | Round 1

MR PETER STEFFAN, TEACHER - GEOGRAPHY

On Friday 21 February, a squad of 16 hopeful souls gathered at the College Archway for the 6:30 am departure for the trip north to Maitland for the first engagement in the CIS Cup Football competition. Arriving at Metford Recreation Reserve just after 9am the boys kitted up attended to the coach’s instructions and warmed up for the match with Hunter Valley Grammar School.

As the game progressed the Riverview boys displayed good touches and team work and maintained possession, while dominating field position. While opportunities on goal were created, actual goals were not forthcoming. In the 34th minute a penalty was won and Sam Ryan stepped up to the spot. His successful conversion of the opportunity sent the Riverview team into half time with a narrow but satisfying lead.

The home team also had their chances, including a short range indirect free kick which was successfully defended by the Riverview boys late in the 1st half.

In the second half the game proceeded in the same fashion, with Riverview having the better of play and field position, but unable to find a goal to consolidate the lead. On the bench, tension was building as the spectre of a late goal by the HVGS team hung over the squandered opportunities.

With seconds left on the clock, the anticipated catastrophe unfolded as the home team launched a raid through the centre of the park. This resulted in a goal scored in the left hand corner of the goal. The Riverview boys barely had time to kick off before the referee blew time, sending the game directly to penalties (as per the competition rules). The Hunter Valley goalie saved the first two shots and from there the home side won the match 3-1 on penalties.

The Riverview squad packed up, embarked on a return journey remarkable for its dense traffic and increasing showers and arrived back at the College in time for the end of the day. The next match in this competition will be within the coming month against an opponent yet to be advised.

We welcomed 14 new boarders to the group which makes for a busy Year 9 house but the basis of a really strong community.

The biggest change for the boys is moving from a one level dorm to a house spread over three levels and separate bedrooms. In one sense this is seen as a real positive as the boys can have their own space, but it also can mean the boys don’t integrate together as much as what they should and like to.

Considering this change our aim is to build a strong community through outings, dinners, and community events on site.

The boys have loved their Gartlan time at night and we have the regular cricket training in the nets and touch footy games on the oval. There have also been been fantastic outings to Manly beach, Waratahs Game, White Water world and spots of fishing on the weekend.

This Sunday, we are looking forward to assisting with clean up Australia Day!

    Join the Canteen Team!

Calling all parents and carers: come and join the canteen team and help provide our students with fresh, nourishing meals and snacks each day. To keep this service running smoothly, we rely on the invaluable help of volunteers.

Volunteering at the canteen is a wonderful way to connect with the school community and get involved in daily life at Riverview. Whether you have a few hours to spare once a week or once a term, your time and support would be greatly appreciated.

No prior experience is needed—just a friendly attitude and a willingness to lend a hand. You’ll work alongside our dedicated staff, meet other parents, and maybe even pick up a few cooking tips along the way!

If you’re interested in joining the canteen roster, we’d love to hear from you. Please reach out to canteen@riverview.nsw.edu.au

    Christopher Brennan Library

What's new in the Christopher Brennan Library?

    MS JENNIFER POCKNALL, LIBRARIAN

    What’s new?

When the World Tips Over by Jandy Nelson is a new Young Adult (YA) novel that promises to be a great read:

The Fall siblings live in hot Northern California wine country, where the sun pours out of the sky, and the devil winds blow so hard they whip the sense right out of your head.

Years ago, the Fall kids’ father mysteriously disappeared, cracking the family into pieces. Now Dizzy Fall, age twelve, bakes cakes, sees spirits, and wishes she were a heroine of a romance novel. Miles Fall, seventeen, brainiac, athlete, and dog-whisperer, is a raving beauty, but also lost, and desperate to meet the kind of guy he dreams of. And Wynton Fall, nineteen, who raises the temperature of a room just by entering it, is a virtuoso violinist set on a crash course for fame . . . or self-destruction.

    What’s on?

The library recently purchased some new chess sets and is now holding a competition that will culminate with a winner in Week 9. The games will be played at lunch time.

Everyone is welcome to enter into the draw.
