Highway to Heaven
FR TOM RENSHAW SJ, RECTOR
In the last two weeks, we have celebrated three significant events in the life of the Church:
- the 800th anniversary of the death of Saint Francis of Assisi;
- the first celebration of the feast day of Saint Carlo Acutis on 12 October – the first “millennial” saint; and
- the announcement of the dates for the 54th International Eucharistic Congress to be held in Sydney from 24 September – 1 October 2028, including the visit of Pope Leo XIV to Australia.
Australia has previously hosted this Congress twice: in Sydney in 1928 and in Melbourne in 1973. In 2025, Pope Leo XIV chose the theme, ‘This is My Body, Given for You’, for the congress, taken from the account of Jesus Christ’s Last Supper with his disciples. Over the next two years, preparation for the Eucharistic Congress will be a significant focus for the Church in Sydney. As part of this, there will be restoration works and renovations of Saint Mary’s Cathedral, the mother Church of Australia. The first St Mary’s Cathedral was built by Fr John Joseph Therry, the first Catholic priest to come to Australia in 1820. When he died, he left his estate to the Irish Jesuits, and through his generous bequest the Irish Jesuits were able to buy the beautiful property that is now our school.
In addition to this, we learnt this week that Pope Leo XIV has been diagnosed with lung cancer and was operated on a few days ago. I invite all of us to pray for Pope Leo and his full restoration of health so that he can continue to lead the universal Church for many more years, including being able to visit our city in two years' time. This will be only the 5th time a Pope has visited Australia, with Pope Paul VI coming in 1970, Pope John Paul II visiting in 1986 and in 1995 for the beatification of Mother Mary MacKillop RSJ, and then Pope Benedict XVI in 2008 for World Youth Day.

Saint Carlo Acutis was born in 1991, and he died tragically from leukaemia in 2006, aged 15. He attended the Jesuit school in Milan called Leo XIII Institute. In his own life, he had a deep devotion to Saint Francis of Assisi, and he asked to be buried in Assisi. Saint Carlo’s tomb is located inside the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Assisi, as part of the Sanctuary of the Spoliation. The sanctuary sits in the Piazza del Vescovado, the historic square in Assisi, where the young Saint Francis famously stripped himself of his wealthy clothing, renouncing his riches and embracing a life of poverty.
St Carlo had a great love of the Eucharist, describing it as the highway to heaven. He saw Communion as the best way of growing closer to Jesus. He was fascinated by various Eucharistic miracles and made a website about them. For St Carlo, modern technology was an important vehicle for evangelisation. From 12-25 October, some relics of Saint Carlo are visiting Sydney, and there is an opportunity to pray before these relics, asking Saint Carlo to intercede on your behalf. The relic tour is accompanied by an exhibition on the Eucharistic miracles. This visit is part of the preparation for the International Eucharistic Congress.
For us as Christians, the Eucharist is the source and summit of our Christian life. It is the gift that Jesus Christ bestowed upon the Church at the Last Supper. Through baptism, we become part of the Body of Christ, and through the Eucharist we receive the life-giving Body and Blood of Christ. In turn, we are then sent forth to be the Body of Christ in action in the world. In his apostolic exhortation Evangelii Gaudium – the Joy of the Gospel, Pope Francis reminded us that
The Eucharist, although it is the fullness of sacramental life, is not a prize for the perfect, but a powerful medicine and nourishment for the weak.
The Eucharist is there to help nourish, sustain and encourage all of us in our life of Christian discipleship.
World Youth Day 2027
The College is hoping for students to experience World Youth Day, to be held in Seoul, South Korea, in 2027. There are places available on this trip, which will be held between July 26 and 11 August 2027. The cost is $11,500, and the trip is open to students who are presently in Years 9 and 10 (Year 10 and 11 in 2027). I strongly recommend this experience for students open to the potential excellent formation it offers. If you are interested in your son attending World Youth Day and he is in Year 9 or 10, and he has not expressed his interest as yet, please be in touch with either Mr John Gilles (jpgilles@riverview.nsw.edu.au) or Mr Michael Dela Cruz (MDelaCruz@riverview.nsw.edu.au) before Wednesday 21st October.
Wishing you all every blessing.

From our Principal
A Warm Welcome to the New Term
MR MARK TANNOCK, PRINCIPAL
It has been wonderful to have all students return for Term 4 this week. The boys have settled well into their classes and the active rhythm of life at Riverview. This Term is only eight weeks in duration, and so it is important for every student to recommit to his learning and formation quickly. The Term will be highlighted by a number of major College events including the Junior Play, Year 9 Challenge, Year 10 Sprint Program, Year 11 Father & Son Mass and Dinner and the Blue & White Ball.
The Class of 2026 commenced their HSC Examinations on Tuesday morning. We ask that the Riverview family keep these young men in your prayers over the coming weeks as they pursue their personal academic best.
Prior to the holiday break, we were delighted to hear of a number of nominations for HSC showcases from NESA for our HSC students. The College was delighted that the following students' Industrial Technology Major Projects have been nominated for possible inclusion in SHAPE. SHAPE is a selection of outstanding projects from HSC Design and Technology, Industrial Technology and Textiles and Design students and will be held at the University of Technology Sydney from Tuesday 16 March 2027 to Wednesday 12 April 2027.
- Noah Coble
- Luke Delany
- Oliver Eisenhauer
- Thomas McClintock
- Charles McEvoy
- Nicholli Thompson
- Caius White
- Angus Young
In addition, the following students' music performances have been nominated for possible inclusion in ENCORE. ENCORE presents a selection of outstanding major works by HSC Music students in NSW, including performance, composition and musicology. It will be held at the Sydney Opera House on Monday 22 February 2027.
- Stephen Barchinski
- Matthew Lee
- Caius White
We were also delighted to see Year 9 student Edward Kwok invited to attend the Opening Ceremony of the 2026 Sydney International Poetry Festival and to read one of his own poems.
Supported by the NSW Government, the Sydney International Poetry Festival brings together poets, writers and cultural figures from Australia and around the world. The 2026 Festival will be held from 11 to 15 November, with the official Opening Ceremony taking place at NSW Parliament House on 11 November 2026.
Edward has had a special connection with the Festival from a young age. One of his poems was selected for inclusion in the anthology of the 2022 Sydney International Poetry Festival, and he also received the New Poet Award in recognition of his literary promise.
In December 2025, Edward was invited to join a delegation of Australian poets on a cultural and literary visit to China, where he participated in five poetry events. As a young Australian secondary school student, his presence and poetry brought a fresh and energetic voice to the programs, and he was warmly received by local audiences.
The College is very pleased that Edward has continued to pursue his interest in poetry. One of his new poems has once again been selected for publication in the forthcoming 2026 Sydney International Poetry Festival anthology, A Chorus Above the Fractures.
Well done, Edward!

Student Leadership
Message from Ben Camilleri, College Captain
BEN CAMILLERI, COLLEGE CAPTAIN
Welcome back to Term 4. Following a rejuvenating and enjoyable break, the College once again returned to a sea of khaki as students and staff commenced the final term of the year.
Over the break, however, there were several notable events and milestones across various endeavours of the College. From success at the NSWJRU 7s State Championships, with several boys competing, to an outstanding GPS pre-season campaign by the 2nd V basketball unit, who claimed a dominant victory over Newington in the Yeend Shield final to secure the trophy, our boys continued to strive for the magis across a range of fields.
Beyond the sporting arena, 25 Year 11 students participated in an immersion to Cape York, on the far north-eastern fringe of Queensland. Through exhaustion and adversity, the group persevered with remarkable camaraderie, returning from an experience that I’m sure was truly transformative.
Returning to the present, this week saw the commencement of HSC examinations for the graduating class of 2026, OR2026. We wish them every success and keep them in our thoughts and prayers as they take this final step beyond the school gates.
Looking into the future, this weekend marks the inaugural round of the GPS summer sports against our old foe, Newington, the black and white army. To all those competing in the pool, on the field, in the river, on the track or across the court, I wish you a season defined by respect, continuous improvement and, ultimately, premiership glory.
On that note, I would like to express my genuine excitement and optimism for the year ahead. Beside me stand George Bradford and Sam Bull, our respective Captains of Boarders and Day Boys, alongside our House, Liturgical and Sporting Leaders, who share this same enthusiasm for the year ahead. Together, we hope to make 2027 a truly memorable final chapter for our cohort as we approach the culmination of our journey at Riverview. Above all, we hope to make this a year defined by service to others, love and filled with the joy of the friendships and experiences that have shaped our time at the College.

Ignatian Centre
The price of excellence is constant vigilance
MR JOHN GILLES, DIRECTOR OF RELIGIOUS FORMATION
At the opening assembly for Term 4, I spoke to students about human excellence and its importance in the life of a Catholic, Jesuit school. I reflected on the role of morning prayer and the daily Examen in helping us pause, reflect on our experiences and consider how we can continue to grow.
"The price of excellence is constant vigilance." Vigilance is keeping a careful, continuous watch on how things are going.
Excellence is rarely about one grand gesture. It is usually about consistently doing the small things well. And the culture of an excellent school is built in the same way. It is built through hundreds of small decisions made every day by every member of the community.
Stopping for Morning Prayer
One of those small decisions is what we do when the morning prayer begins. When prayer begins, the expectation is simple: stop, be still, and be present.
This is not primarily about passive obedience – the College is not seeking to form robots. It is about a common recognition and reminder of what we hold to be most important – that we are here to build God’s kingdom where every person, every person is worthy of being treated with the utmost dignity. And we hope that you are open enough to that idea to recognise this through your attentiveness to morning prayer.
It is about respect.
- Respect for God, and the recognition of what really matters.
- Respect for the person leading the prayer.
- Respect for the students and staff around us.
- Respect for the identity of our College as a Catholic Jesuit school.
The Challenge
So, my challenge to you is to be very attentive to your own actions and to respond to the chime of the bell each morning with focus and purpose. To remember that your actions contribute towards building up the culture of the College.
The real test of character is often what we do when nobody is watching us. The strongest communities are made up of people who remain vigilant about the small habits that define who they are.
Introducing the Examen
St Ignatius regarded the Examen as one of the most important spiritual practices because it helps us become more aware of God's presence in ordinary life. The Examen is intended to heighten our sensitivity to God's presence and action in our daily experience.
- The Examen is not another task to complete.
- It is a gift.
- In the middle of a busy day, it provides you with a chance to pause, reflect, and ask:
- What has shaped me today?
- What am I grateful for?
- Where have I been my best self?
- Where can I do better?
We live in a noisy world where most people spend their day reacting. The Examen, however, teaches us to reflect and gain insight into ourselves, developing the skill of self-awareness. You might remember we talked about self-awareness as one of the areas of social and emotional learning when we launched the Wellbeing Framework last term. We very strongly believe that the Examen is in fact a very powerful tool to strengthen your sense of Wellbeing – a little each day. And when you add that up over a year, that is a wonderful investment in your own internal wellbeing.
This term, I would like every student to take responsibility for two simple acts:
- Stop immediately when morning prayer is announced.
- Engage genuinely in the daily Examen.
Neither takes long or is difficult, but both help shape the kind of community we want to be and the kind of men we hope you become.
Closing
So, in closing, "The price of excellence is constant vigilance."
In a Jesuit school, excellence is not only measured by marks, trophies, or achievements. It is measured by our attentiveness to God, to one another, the created environment and to the small daily practices that form our character.
Let us be a community that stops, reflects, prays, and grows together.

Books needed for Cambodia!
MS REBECCA MARREN & MS SHARON BIGNOLD
As you know, Riverview has strong relationships with overseas communities through our Immersion Programs. One important relationship is with our Cambodian brothers and sisters, where, through Immersions and a weekly online reading program, Riverview students help break the cycle of poverty through learning English.
One key organisation Riverview works with is The Matesabroad Foundation, and Louise MacNamara, the Program Manager, is seeking our help.
Each year she takes our Year 11 boys on immersion to Cambodia, and each boy teaches a different storybook. She has prepared extensive resources using each story as a springboard. The Khmer teachers will then use those books and resources as a library lesson. At present they do not have enough copies of each book for the Khmer schools.
To that end, we are wondering if there are any families that might have the following popular books, in good condition, they no longer need?
This is the list of books:
- Are You My Mother? – P.D. Eastman
- Bears in the Night – Stan and Jan Berenstain
- Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? – Bill Martin Jr. (illustrated by Eric Carle)
- Edward the Emu – Sheena Knowles (illustrated by Rod Clement)
- Harry the Dirty Dog – Gene Zion (illustrated by Margaret Bloy Graham)
- Hattie and the Fox – Mem Fox
- I Wish That I Had Duck Feet – Dr. Seuss (writing as Theo LeSieg)
- It's Not Easy Being a Bunny – Marilyn Sadler
- Monkey Puzzle – Julia Donaldson (illustrated by Axel Scheffler)
- Mr McGee and the Big Bag of Bread – Pamela Allen
- Oh Dear, Look What I Got! – Michael Rosen (illustrated by Helen Oxenbury)
- Pig the Winner – Aaron Blabey
- Put Me in the Zoo – Robert Lopshire
- Rainbow Fish – Marcus Pfister
- Stick Man – Julia Donaldson (illustrated by Axel Scheffler)
- The Best Nest – P.D. Eastman
- The Bike Lesson – Stan and Jan Berenstain
- The Gruffalo – Julia Donaldson (illustrated by Axel Scheffler)
- The Magic Hat – Mem Fox
- The Smartest Giant in Town – Julia Donaldson (illustrated by Axel Scheffler)
- The Very Busy Spider – Eric Carle
- The Very Lazy Ladybird – Isobel Finn (illustrated by Jack Tickle)
- We're Going on a Bear Hunt – Michael Rosen (illustrated by Helen Oxenbury)
- Wombat Stew – Marcia K. Vaughan
- Wacky Wednesday – Dr. Seuss (writing as Theo LeSieg)
- The Bears' Holiday – Stan and Jan Berenstain
- The Very Hungry Caterpillar – Eric Carle
- Macca the Alpaca – Matt Cosgrove
Please be aware IT IS THESE BOOKS ONLY - (no other titles are needed at this stage) and we are looking for them to be in good condition. This is a great way to help our brothers and sisters in Cambodia, as well as care for our common home by reusing unwanted books from the list above.
If you can help, please bring your donations to the Dalton House Office OR Ms Bignold’s Homeroom at Regis. Please bring in your donations by November 9th. Thank you to those who already have donated these books!

Regis Campus
Loreto Normanhurst and Regis Year 5 Leadership Day
MS CAITLIN REMEEUS, DIRECTOR OF REGIS CAMPUS
Year 5 students from Regis visited Loreto Normanhurst on Thursday for a highly successful Leadership Day that celebrated collaboration, friendship and student leadership. Throughout the day, students participated in a range of engaging team challenges, games and activities designed to develop communication, problem-solving and leadership skills.
Once we got over the first challenge of holding hands with the girls. The boys worked alongside new peers, embraced opportunities to challenge themselves, support one another and build meaningful connections. The activities were centred around leadership, focusing on building trust and being open to sharing your ideas. The activities encouraged teamwork, resilience and creativity, while fostering a strong sense of belonging and mutual respect.
We finished the day with a Q&A with our Regis captains, Gabe and Raph, and the Loreto captains, who spoke candidly about their roles and the leadership qualities they developed over the year.
We were immensely proud of our community. We saw our Year 5 boys integrate with ease and listened to our Year 6 captains share their stories.
This enriching experience highlighted the value of collaboration between our two schools and gave students meaningful opportunities to learn from one another while building the confidence and skills needed to become future leaders.

Performing Arts
Ignatian Choir performs at Sydney Combined Schools Choral Festival
MR PETER WATTERS, HEAD OF FACULTY - MUSIC
On Thursday 15 October, members of the Saint Ignatius’ College Riverview Ignatian Choir participated in the Sydney Combined Schools Choral Festival at St James’ Church, Sydney.
The concert brought together choirs from eight Sydney schools for a special performance of Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem, one of the most beautiful and celebrated works in the choral repertoire.
This was a wonderful opportunity for our students to perform alongside fellow young musicians in a large combined choir, experiencing the richness and power of singing a major choral work in the magnificent setting of Sydney’s oldest church, designed by Francis Greenway in 1819.
Riverview was also proudly represented in the accompanying orchestra, with Charlie Hennessy-Bowden (Trumpet) and Will Thomas (French Horn) performing as orchestral musicians for this special event under the baton of Thomas Wilson, Director of Music at St James’ Church.
A further highlight was a solo performance by Chester Johnson (Organ), who performed Gabriel Fauré’s Cantique de Jean Racine, Op. 11, on the magnificent new custom built organ at St James’ Church. This was a wonderful opportunity for Chester to showcase his musicianship in such a distinguished setting.
The evening provided an exceptional musical experience for all involved, challenging students to develop their musicianship, ensemble skills and confidence while collaborating with talented young performers from across Sydney.
Congratulations to all members of the Ignatian Choir, Charlie, Will and Chester for representing the College with such distinction. Special thanks to Mr Kirk Hume, Director of the Ignatian Choir, for his dedication in preparing and supporting the students for this memorable musical occasion.

Boarding
Welcome Back for Term 4!
MR ANTHONY BEGG, DIRECTOR OF BOARDING
Welcome back to all our boarding families for the final term of 2026. We hope everyone enjoyed a restful break and has returned refreshed and ready for a busy and exciting conclusion to the year.
It is hard to believe how quickly the year has gone, and as always, Term 4 will pass by in the blink of an eye. There is plenty happening across the boarding community over the coming weeks, and we encourage families to make note of the important dates below.
Dates to make note of
- Friday 6 November – 2027 Year 7 Boarding Sleepover & Parent Function
- Saturday 7 November – Year 12 Blue and White Ball
- Tuesday 1 December – Boarders' Christmas Liturgy, 6.30pm, Dalton Chapel
- Wednesday 2 December – Final Day and Assembly. The 2026 school year concludes at 12.00pm
We are looking forward to our final Boarding Roadshow events for the year in Hong Kong (20 October) and Singapore (22 October). These events provide a wonderful opportunity to connect with current families, Old Ignatians, past parents and friends of the College, while also introducing prospective families to the Riverview boarding experience. If you have friends or family in either city who may be interested in boarding at Riverview, we encourage you to share the event details with them.
A reminder that all general boarding communications are shared via the College App. To ensure you don't miss important updates, event information and boarding notices, please check that your notifications are switched on and up to date.
As boys return for the term, we also ask families to ensure that all clothing and personal items are clearly labelled with the student's name. Clearly named items make it much easier for staff to return misplaced belongings and significantly reduce the amount of lost property throughout the term.
We look forward to a wonderful final term and thank all families for your continued support of our boarding community. Let's make the most of these final weeks together as we wrap up another successful year in boarding.

BPA Update
MR ANTHONY BEGG, DIRECTOR OF BOARDING
The Boarding community extends its sincere thanks to Kylie Symons for her outstanding service as President of the Boarder Parents’ Association over the past year.
Kylie’s passion for boarding stems from her own experience as a boarder and from having lived both in the city and on the land. This unique perspective has enabled her to connect with and advocate strongly for boarding families from a wide range of backgrounds. Throughout her tenure, Kylie has been a tireless supporter of the boarding community, generously giving her time, energy and expertise to ensure the voices of boarding families were heard and represented.
Her commitment, enthusiasm and unwavering dedication have made a significant contribution to the boarding experience at Riverview. On behalf of all boarding families and staff, we thank Kylie for her exceptional service and the countless hours she has devoted to supporting our community. We are deeply grateful for all she has done and look forward to her continued involvement in boarding life.
As Kylie steps down, we are delighted to welcome Alice Beardmore as the incoming President of the Boarder Parents’ Association.
Alice is a valued member of the Riverview community and has been actively involved in supporting boarding initiatives for several years. She is the proud mother of two boarders, Noah (Year 11) and Carter (Year 8), and brings a wealth of experience, insight and enthusiasm to the role. We look forward to Alice’s leadership, energy and commitment as she guides the BPA into its next chapter and continues to strengthen the connection between boarding families and the College.
We are also pleased to welcome Lucy Roche as the new BPA Secretary. As a mother of three boys, Lucy has a deep understanding of both Riverview and the boarding journey. Her knowledge of the College community, combined with her strong organisational skills and dedication to supporting boarding families, makes her exceptionally well suited to the role.
We thank Kylie for her remarkable service and warmly welcome Alice and Lucy to their new roles. We look forward to another successful year of partnership, connection and support for our boarding families.

Canteen update - Flexischools fee changes and summer menu
Following changes to payment surcharge rules introduced from 1 October 2026, Flexischools has updated its fee structure. For families, this includes the removal of card payment surcharges, an increase in the online ordering fee from 33 cents to 39 cents per order, and an 18-cent fee for purchases made using a student card linked to a Flexischools account. A minimum wallet top-up of $10 also applies; however, students can continue to make purchases of any value using their available balance. For further information about these changes and their impact on families, please visit www.flexischools.com.au
Be sure to explore the canteen’s new summer menu, with fresh seasonal options for the warmer months!

Inclusion Program Walkathon
JACK BRAY (YEAR 9, OWEN)
Last Term, my classmates and I in the Inclusion Program completed a walkathon around Narrabeen Lagoon. It was a beautiful day, and the weather was perfect. After a difficult but relaxing walk around the lagoon, we had a delicious BBQ lunch put on by the teachers. It was a great day spending time with my classmates and having some laughs along the way. Mr Jones’ music wasn't too bad either.
The walkathon is one of my favourite days of the year, but we are also reminded why we do it. Each year our class raises funds to support children in Brickfields, India. We raise enough money for them to go to school and receive healthcare for the year. My classmates and I also stand up in front of our House groups to raise awareness and donations. It is a bit nerve-racking at the time, but we do it because it is important to be ‘men and women for others’.

Prayers
